Thanks again Arline for your help in my efforts to obtain information on James Torbett. It
would help in identifying the unit in which he served if you could check the records of
the NV Hist. Soc. for the units of Officers, and from their billets in the 1880 census I
might make an educated guess as to those enlisted personnel assigned to the 1st Cav. and
to those assigned to 8th Inf.
On Pg. 6 of the census, the first enumerating Ft. Halleck, Captain John Andrews &
family are enumerated, followed by Lt. O.J. Browner (writing interpretation). All others
on that sheet are farmers and their families, as are 46 persons on the following page.
On Pg 8, three soldiers and their families are enumerated, whom I suspect are
NCO's. Next is Colonel G.B. Sanford, with family and servants. Next is Lt.P.H.Ray,
then a civilian, (a butcher) and then James Torbett and twenty-nine other soldiers.
Page 9 enumerates 50 soldiers, and Pg 10 enumerates 27 soldiers, Captain C.C.C. Carr,
Lt. H.E. Tutherly, and Lt.W.L. Pitcher. No other service personnel are enumerated on Pgs.
10 and 11.
Therefore, my count of E.M.'s total approximates that which you quoted from the
Historical Society. Maybe based on the officer aggignments I might be able to guess the
enlisted men's unit assignments. I'm open to suggestions from you or any other
listers.
