My GGrandfather, Erastus Woodruff, of the Nevada Staging Firm of "Woodruff &
Ennor" owned the Trout Creek Ranch in Strar Valley from 1879 until on
May6,1898 he sold the ranch to John & Jefferson Cazier. Woodruff & Ennor's
other ranch the "Old Stage Ranch", which was located in Clover Valley was
managed by John Crocker, who was a business partner in the staging firm,
until his death on June 20, 1885. The Old Stage Ranch went to his widow
Kate Crocker. He also had a son Charlie S. Cracker who was the Wells Fargo
Agent in Cherry Creek in 1886. Kate Crocker sold the Stage ranch to Dillon
Roberts Nov. 9, 1909.
My grandmother Winnifred Woodruff, was born in 1882. She spent all her
summers at the Trout Creek Ranch, which is located now at the Welcome
interchange and Hwy 80, a few miles west of Wells. She remembered being
taught to dance by Death Valley Scotty, as he was a foreman on her fathers
ranch. As the story goes, she also remembers her father saying "Scotty
skipped out owing me money". The Woodruff's and Crockers both migrated from
Coloma California where they lived from 1850 to 1870.
