Randy,
I have been research my ggrandfather Erastus Woodruff in Nevada for some 25
years now. He and his partner Joseph Ennor ran a large stage coach
enterprise thruout the norther part of the state from 1866-1884. Years ago
I found a announcement in the June 14, 1871, "White Pines News", Wedding
Lic/Cert Woodruff E. married S.C. Murdock at Hammilton. (also June 18,
Pg.2,col.4). I've found nothing more on the Murdock family, and wondered if
this Murdock fits into anything in your lineage?
I have an Idea that the Murdock name was involved in West Point, an area
locted 50 miles n/e of Las Vegas. Mormans founded this small settlement (20
family) in the Upper Muddy River Valley in 1867. After marauding Indians,
hunger, disease, flash floods and poor harvest had taken their toll during
1869-70, the Church granted permission for settlers to vacate the community
in Sept. 1870 (right after the states Sep.1,1870, County of Pahute Census.)
Less than a month later the entire population of 119 moved to fairer parts
of the valley and re-established farms. The breaking of the West Point was
the signal for a visit by church president Brigham Young to Muddy River
Valley, and eventual abandonment of southern Nevada by the Mormans by Feb.
1871. ( from Nevada Ghost Towns & Mining Camps pg. 287) .
If I recall, it was in that 1870 State Census that I saw the Murdock family.
Please advise if S.C. Murdock is known to your research.
