The Winter family was quite prominent in early NV. Lovely old house in
Washoe Valley was recently restored that belonged to some of them...sits
right beside 395 near north end of lake. One of the Winter's was a state
senator around late 1800's.....don't recall exact names/dates.
Some time back I did a bit research on one of the family that lived in Elko
county. Very interesting story. A neighbor shot the Winter patriarch of
the area.....something over cattle rustling or water rights....again, I
don't recall, but Winter was the accuser, not the accused. There was a
well-reported trial and the perpetrator did jail time though he protested
his innocence, claiming self defense. Strange plea as Winter was shot six
times in the back as he tried to get away.
I believe there is some information on the Winter family also available at
the Fourth Ward School in Virginia City. You might want to start with
querying the Fourth Ward School, and with the Elko Historical
Society/Museum. If the Museum does not have a web presence, some of their
members are very active on the Elko County GenWeb site.
At any rate, know there should be plenty of material available on this
family throughout the northern part of the state. Good luck with your
search.....
