The Arden Mining District, near present-day Blue Diamond, had the closest mining operation to Las Vegas. It wasn't precious metel, but gypsum, used to make building materials such as plaster, that sparked a small operation to begin in 1909. The district was named for a station established two years earlier on the railroad, a few miles to the east, where the gypsum would eventually be milled and shipped. Most workers in Arden were of Mexican or Italian descent.
The mill was established by the ALPINE PLASTER CO. The engineer on the plant was J.T. McWilliams and W.K. Moore was in charge of operations when the plant opened. Located ten miles south of Las Vegas. The mill closed in 1927.
The original claim was sold to the Blue Diamond Gypsum Co. by Robert E Lake who was a barber in Las Vegas.
Hope this helps you out. If further info is needed let me know.
