James Summerbell's parents were Nicholas Summerbell (1760/62-1844) and Jane Wilson
(1766-1848) of Northumberland County, England. They immigrated to America with their young
children in 1799 and settled in Shrub Oak, Yorktown, Westchester County NY. James had
three younger sisters: Jane (m. Joshua Mead of Putnam County), Ann (m. Walter Carpenter of
Shrub Oak) and Elizabeth (m. Lewis Vail of Yorktown). If you want to email me privately,
I will send you more information about them.
The biggest treasure trove of American Summerbell research is a 45 page family history
written by Dr. Martyn Summerbell. It was published in 1916 as an appendix to the book
"Public Activities of Rev. J.J. Summerbell, D.D." by Carlyle Summerbell. I
ordered a photocopy from the Library of Congress several years ago, but before I offer to
send you a copy, I have to determine if I can still find it after my last move.
Thank you for the offer of more Burns information. My immediate interest is having correct
and more complete data on your AMS's children (birth/baptism, marriages, death/burial,
wherever possible).
