Unterholzner, Holt, Gray -- WI > CA > OR > NV
Author: Jim Johnson Date: 25 Mar 2002 2:44 AM GMT
Surnames: Unterholzner, Holt, or Gray
Trying to locate any information on Nicholas Unterholzner/ Nicholas Holt or
Mary Elizabeth Gray.
NICHOLAS MATIAS (UNTERHOLZNER)2 HOLT, b. December 06, 1888, Innsbruck,
Austria; d. January 01, 1979, Fallon, Nevada; m. MARY ELIZABETH GRAY,
January 24, 1925, Carson City, Nevada; b. February 26, 1903, Humboldt
County, California (northern CA, near Arcata); d. July 31, 1968, Fallon,
Nevada.
Nicholas Unterholzner was eight years old when he and his father, John
immigrated in 1897. Nicholas Unterholzner listed as his place of birth as
Tisena, Austria and his date of birth was actually listed as 6 Dec 1887 and
also 16 Dec 1888. Nicholas Unterholzner changed his name to HOLT due to the
anti-german feelings of WW1. It is believed that when they came to the US,
they stayed alittle while with a family relation who owned a bewery in
Wisconsin.
It seems that Nicholas grew up in the Milwaukee area (that also leads me to
believe that there were family members there in addition to his father –
someone had to care for an eight year old boy while his father worked). In
his teens – and probably after his father had returned to Austria - Nick
left Wisconsin and began to make his way west. We know that he worked in
the Benicia, California area for a while (in the San Francisco Bay area).
In his request for a change of surname in 1918, he indicates that he is
living in Lyon county, Nevada (he would have been 30 years old at the
time). He did not marry until 1925 when he brought Mary Elizabeth Gray to
the Fallon, Nevada area as a new bride. He was buried January 03, 1979,
Fallon, Nevada. Her death certificate lists California as her state of
birth and confirms that her father's name was Walter Gray. Her date of
birth is given as January 24, 1903 Mary's mother's maiden name was Derruce
and that correlates !
with the cenus information that her maternal grandfather was French. Jack
has commented several times that his mother looked French.
Any help or information as to names, locations, or web sites to be searched
would be appreciated
