Article Description: County Pioneer Dies At Luning (Sam C. Steele)
Article Text:
Sam C. STEELE, died Thursday at his home in Luning at the age of 64. Death was due to
stomach trouble from which Sam had suffered for many years. He had been a resident of
Mineral county for 25 years. A glass blower by trade, he drifted from the lines of his
profession to join the rush to the Dutch Creek area at the time the reservation was thrown
open to the public. From Dutch Creek, moved to Hawthorne and here established some of the
largest freight trains ever known in the district. For many years he followed this
business, freighting to all surrounding points. When automobiles commenced to supplant the
freight wagons, Steele went to Luning where he made his home with his wife until the time
of his death, Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Will MEHAFFY who
resides in Seattle.
Funeral services were held at Luning Sunday afternoon and a large host of friends
gathered from Hawthorne and Mina to pay their last respects to Steele. The final tributes
were made by Frank WEAVER. A choir composed of L. WHITING, Mrs W.G. WEST, F. WEAVER and
Mr. and Mrs. McKEOUGH rendered several selections.
