Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Walter VOORHEES, a prominent member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe at Schurz, died Tuesday, 4 Aug at the age of 89.
He was born 3 Apr 1903 to Daniel and Mattie (MEYERS) VOORHEES.
Walter got his education at the Stewart Indian School and Carson City High School and went on to graduate from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS.
He served in the cavalry with the KS National Guard from 1924 - 1925. He joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1925 as a steno clerk, working at various Indian agencies from 1925 - 1940. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years.
He served on the Walker River Tribal Council for 43 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille and his daughter, Barbara BROWN. He is survived by son, Robert; daughters, Joanne CROWLEY, Walita TOM, Vicki VERAIN and a brother, Kenneth VOORHEES, all of Schurz, 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildrenand numerous neices and nephews.
Funeral and burial will be in Schurz.

Jason Richard McKAY, 23, died 8 Mar at Washoe Med Cenetr, Reno, from injuries sustained from an auto accident 23 Feb in Schurz.
He was born 9 Apr 1969 in Schurz to Richard and Anita (COLLINS) McKAY. He was a water resource manager for the Walker River Paiute Tribe in Schurz at the time of his death.
He graduated from Yerington High in 1987, playing both football and baseball.
He served in the USMC from 1988 - 1992. He served in Panama during the crisis and on the USS Trenton during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
A tribal dance was held Saturday 11 Mar, followed by a graveside funeral with military honors at the Walker River Indian Cemetery.

June Darlene BASS, former resident of Hawthorne, died Sunday, 5 Mar at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Buffalo, KS.
Darlene was a waitress at the El Cap before she left here 20 years ago.
She was born in IA 16 Sep 1925 to Roy Delano and June Margaret (NEWMAN) LUTZ. She and Walter BASS, who survives her, were married 26 Feb 1979 in Miami, OK.
Services were held at United Brethren in Christ Church with burial following at the Buffalo Cemetery.

Marjorie M. FISK FERGUSON, 75, died 8 Mar at Mount Grant Hospital here.
Mrs. FERGUSON was born 8 Oct 1919 in Reno to Charles and Leila (GRAY) FISK. She was raised and attended schools in Fallon, NV, moving to Hawthorne in 1942. She was VP of Security National Bank, retiring in 1975.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1954.
Funeral was held Monday, 13 Mar at Hawthorne Funeral Home. Burial followed in Fallon Cemetery.

Hawthorne resident Lou LOCKWOOD Sr., 54, passed away 2 Apr in Yerington, NV. He was born in Schurz, NV 16 Nov 1945 to Neal and Emily (GREELEY) LOCKWOOD).
He had lived in Hawthorne for 10 years, living in Shiprock, NM, Ogden,UT, Kings Canyon,AZ, Phoenix, AZ, Stewart, NV and Schurz before moving here.
Lou was a boxing coach in Schurz and also had boxed himself from the late 1970's to the early 1980's. He served in the U.S. Army in Viet Nam.
Funeral will be Saturday at the Methodist Church in Schurz with burial to follow in Walker River Cemetery, Schurz.

He was born 10 Aug 1923 in Scobey, MT. He had been a resident of Hawthorne for 13 years.
He was a WWII veteran having served with the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, his parents and three brothers.
Cremation will be at Reno Crematory. Memorial service and burial will be planned for a later date in MT.

Marvin Walter SCHNICKE, 74, passed away 16 Nov at Mount Grant Hospital, Hawthorne. He was born in Sheboygan, WI 23 Jun 1924 to Herbert and Wilemena (BODENSTENGEL) SCHNICKE. Marvin came to Hawthorne from WI to work at NAD, which he did for 30 years. He was married to Lorraine M. (TASCHE) SCHNICKE.
Memorial service 21 Nov at Gunter's Funeral Home, Hawthorne, followed by interment in Hawthorne Cemetery.

Rose had lived in Hawthorne since 1962, arriving from Jerome, ID.
She was married to Martin KICHENMASTER of Hawthorne, who survives, along with her children and some of her siblings.
Her parents, 5 brothers and 2 sisters preceded her in death.
Interment will be in Hawthorne Cemetery.
