Mina Roadblock Scene Of Shooting
Article Text:
Hawthorne, 26 Jun (Special) Joseph CUNNINGHAM, 54, former Reno carpenter, was fatally shot Saturday night at a roadblock on the outskirts of Mina.
There was an inquest that determined CUNNINGHAM died of a gunshot wounds inflicted by Mike SMITH, Mineral County Sheriff and Jack DOUGLAS who assisted SMITH in his duties. At the inquest testimony indicated that CUNNINGHAM had threatned Mr. and Mrs. DOUGLAS and Mr. and Mrs. Dave TURNER of Coaldale with a pistol earlier in the evening. He then carjacked Edith GRINDLING of Los Angeles who had her father J.H. GRINDLING also in the car.
TURNER and DOUGLAS persued the vehicle and their wives called ahead to Mina to have a roadblock set up. When Mrs. GRINDLING was forced to stop her car at the roadblock CUNNINGHAM got out of the highjaced vehicle and started waving his gun at SMITH. DOUGLAS and TURNER arrived at which time CUNNINGHAM told DOUGLAS to leave. SMITH fired a shot at CUNNINGHAM, hitting him in the leg. SMITH and DOUGLAS each fired a shot, SMITH's hiting CUNNINGHAM in the shoulder. After another round of fire CUNNINGHAM was hit in a vital spot and went down. He died in route to the hospital in neighboring Hawthorne.
James RAY, NHP testified that just last week CUNNINGHAM was found wandering around in the desert and was held for two days in Goldfield jai. At that time CUNNINGHAM said he came West from NY several years ago and was estranged from his wife and three sons.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
