Genevieve 'Jennie'MacDougall 85, RIVER RYAN Genevieve 'Jennie' MacDougall
passed away on August 24, 2006at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by her
family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary
(White) MacMullin. Being the youngest of 10 children, she was the last
surviving member of her family. Jennie and her late husband, Hector
MacDougall, resided for many years in Toronto, where she worked for the
City of Toronto as a clerical worker until her retirement, then she was a
volunteer at the Cumar Lodge in North York. She was a member of the St.
Pasquel Baylon parish, North York. Jennie's hobbies included knitting,
crocheting and oil painting. Those who have known them, always referred to
them as a couple figure 'Jennie and Hector'. She returned to Cape Breton
five years ago to live with her niece, Mary Gillis, River Ryan. She enjoyed
touring Cape Breton, the shopping malls andeating out in different
restaurants. Jennie is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides
her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Mary Currie, Susie
Graham and Margaret O'Quinn, brothers, Robert, Fraser, Albert,William,
George and Alexander. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave.,New Waterford 862-7500.
Visitation will take place Friday, August 25, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. The
remains will then go to R.S. Kane's Funeral Home, Toronto for visitation
and cremation will follow. A memorial service will be held at a later date

Dennis Gerard Carey 63, BRAS D'OR JUNE 16, 1943-AUGUST 24, 2006 It is with
sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis Gerard Carey of Bras d'Or on
Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by
his loving family members. After a courageous 14-year battle with cancer,
called to his Heavenly Home. Born in Bras d'Or, he was the son of the late
Robert and Emma (LeBlanc) Carey. Hewas a member of St. Joseph's parish,
Bras d'Or. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 83,
Florence, where he spent most of his days in the past 14 years after his
return to Cape Breton. Dennis joined the military at a very young age,
retiring after 28 years in the service. In 1966, Dennis was in Cyprus with
the UN peacekeepers. Dennis is survived by a son, Jason, and a
daughter,Tina, both of London, Ont.; their mother, Ann Lindenfield; a
sister, Mary (Joe) Blinkhorn, Bras d'Or; three
brothers, Emile (Peg) Carey, Vernon, B.C., Joseph Carey, Quebec, Alexander
(Joan) Carey, Florence; sister-in-law, Muriel Carey, Florence. Besides his
parents, Dennis was predeceased by his first wife, Jacqueline (Blinkhorn)
Carey, sons, Dwayne and Christopher, daughter, Denise, and a son in
infancy. He was also predeceased by his brother, Ernest, sister-in-law,
Mary, and his brother, Robert Jr. There will be no visitation. Cremation
has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home,
635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A memorial mass will be held on Friday,
September 1, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Bras d'Or with Fr.
Peter MacLeod officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery,

Rose Jeannie MacEachern 95, NEW WATERFORD Rose Jeannie MacEachern passed
away peacefully, surrounded by her family and close friends on August 23,
2006 in the New Waterford Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband,
Francis MacEachern, in 1992. Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of
the late Michael and Saade (Shalala) Andrews. Her parents were one of the
first Lebanese families from Lebanon to immigrate to North America from
Hadeth EL Joubbeh, Northern Lebanon in the late 1800's. She was the last
surviving member of her family. She leaves to mourn daughter, Jean Quirk,
Sydney, and son, Francis MacEachern, Georgetown, Ont.; grandchildren, Jim
(Kathleen) Quirk, Sydney, Ann Marie Quirk, Halifax, Ron, Gary, Linda and
David MacEachern,Brampton, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey,
Mitchell, Christopher, Alex, Laura, Tricia, Chelsea and Tess, and her
favorite niece, Rose Totten. Rose was an active member of the St. Agnes
C.W.L, just receiving her 60-year pin and was the secretary for many years.
She frequently visited the sick and volunteered at the New Waterford Manor.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was well
noted for her hospitality, everyone was welcome in her home with hot meals
and a place to stay. She made her home 'a home away from home' with a glad
heart. She lived very independently. There will be no visitation.

Monday, August 28, 2006 at 11 a.m. in St. Agnes Church, new Waterford.

P. Gerard Walsh Philip Gerard Walsh, 82, of Sydney, N.S., and latterly, St.
John's, N.L., made a peaceful passing at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital,
Aug.17, 2006, following a long period of ill health. He was predeceased by
his parents, Edward and Nellie Walsh, brother, John Clifton, sister, Verna
Loretta (Ray MacNeil) and cousins, Phil and Gervais 'Jib' Healey. Left to
celebrate his life are his wife, Nora Walsh (McMahon), Sydney; daughter,
Ethel Walsh Heald, St. John's, and son, Michael, Sydney. Enriched by his
life, and left with a wealth of stories and fond memories of 'Poppy', are
his beloved granddaughters, Fiona Heald Hickman (Jason), Toronto and Meghan
Heald, St. John's. Gerard will be sadly missed by his sister, Lorna
'Goldie'(Russell Carroll), Sydney; brothers, Vernon (Theresa) and Michael
'Dime' (Jean), Ontario, Sydney 'Og' (Mary Evelyn), Sydney; close cousins,
Marguerite, Merlin, Edith, Earle and Sr. Evelyn Healey as well as by
nieces, nephews and other cousins of the extended Walsh and Healey
families. All of whom are grateful for the well wishes and prayers said for
him at Holy Redeemer Church, in the fondly remembered Whitney Pier of his
childhood, where he received his early education, and for many years a
member of the parish men's club. Gerard attended Sydney Academy, St.
Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, the Nova Scotia Technical College,
Halifax, and the University of Moncton. He worked for Sydney Steel and
until his retirementin 1987, at the Cape Breton Regional Vocational School.
In keeping with his wishes, a memorial mass has been celebrated in St.
John's,where hisfamily cherished and cared fo rhim in the last difficult
monthsof his life. Donations may be made in his memory to Palliative Care
or the St. FX Alumni Fund.
Bernard Gillis 59, NEW WATERFORD Bernard Gillis passed away suddenly on
August 23, 2006. Born in Sydney, he was theson of Jerome and the late Sally
(MacNeil) Gillis. Besides his father, he is survivedby a special friend,
several aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces and many friends. He worked in
collieries No.12 and 26 and later for the Bell Phone Company in Ontario. He
was a member of St. Agnes parish.Arrangements are underthe direction of

has taken place and a chapel service will be held in the funeral home,

Rev. Joseph Murdock Young, S.F.M. After a lengthy illness, Fr. Joe Young
died Aug. 23, 2006, at Providence Villa, Scarborough. He was born Sept. 8,
1934, and ordained a priest for the Scarborough Foreign Mission Society on
Aug. 21, 1960. His 46 years of priestly ministry were served in Guyana,
Bahamas and Canada.Fr. Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Mary andJames
Young, and his brothers, Michael, James and Francis, and survived by a
sister, Anne Power of North Sydney. Funeral Mass on Saturday morning at 10

Angela MacKinnon 101, SYDNEY Angela MacKinnon, 101, formerly of MacKinnon
Harbour and Sydney, died peacefully at the Cove Guest Home on Aug. 23,
Born in Big Pond Centre, she was the daughter of Edwin and Jane (MacLellan)
MacIntyre. Angela was a teacher serving in many parts of Cape Breton. In
1940 she married John Murdock MacKinnon of Barra Glen, MacKinnon Harbour.
They lived in Barra Glen until 1961, when they moved to Sydney.She is
survived by a brother, Duncan, Des Moines, Iowa, and sister, Catherine
She was predeceased by husband, John Murdock, seven brothers, Roderick, Hector,
Michael, Hugh, Alex, Thomas and Pius in infancy, two sisters, Hilda
MacPherson and Margaret (Madge) Campbell. Angela will be fondly remembered
by her friends and especially by her many nieces and nephews. Visitation
will be 2-4 p.m. and
7-9 p.m. today (Friday) at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street,
Sydney, and at St. Mary's Church, Big Pond, from 10-11a.m. Saturday. A
funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Church, 11 a.m. Saturday with Fr.
Joe Gillis officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with a
reception to follow at the Big Pond fire hall. Donations may be made in
Angela's memory to the St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, the Cove Guest Home or a
charity of choice.
Vera Maye Ward 79, ABBOTSFORD, B.C. Vera Maye Ward went to be with the Lord
on August 23, 2006 at M.S.A. Hospital, Abbotsford,B.C., at the age of 79
years. Vera is survived by her loving family; husband, Ronald; her
children, Don (Marielle) Hayes, Ray (Debby) Hayes, Sharon (Duncan) Gordon,
Al (Sue) Hayes; 11 grandchildren, five step-children, step-grandchildren
and many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her first
husband, Harold Hayes, son, John, and grandson, Jason. Funeral service will
be held 11 a.m., Monday, August 28,

Neil Roberts 1931-2006 GLACE BAY Neil Roberts of 3 MacDonald's Lane, Glace
Bay, will have a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at St.
Anthony's Cemetery, Glace Bay. Fr. Conrad Edwards will be officiating. A
reception will be held at 16 Ninian St., Glace Bay. All are welcome.

Glace Bay. Elizabeth Brushett 84, LONDON, ONT./ GLACE BAY Elizabeth
Brushett passed away peacefully May 3, 2006, at Marion Villa, London, Ont.
Elizabeth moved to London two and one half years ago from Whycocomagh, N.S.
She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Petrie, Glace Bay. She is
survived by her sister, Effie (Evelyn) Clements, and her niece, Lorna Yorke
and husband Andrew.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alex Brushett, sister, Camella
(Sis) King, brother, Daniel (Bud) Petrie. She will be fondly missed by her
best friends, Marilyn Matheson and Wayne Sealy, and her many cousins,
nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Leo's Church, Glace Bay, with Fr.
officiating. Interment following the service in St. Anne's Cemetery.
