With broken hearts, we announce the sudden death
of our sister, aunt and grand-aunt on Wednesday,
Oct 23, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional, Sydney.
Born in Indian Brook, Victoria County on April
30, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Donald
John (DJ) and Annabelle (MacDonald) Smith.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and
attended services when she was able to do so.
Christine was a graduate of Baddeck Rural High.
She was a graduate of New Waterford Consolidated
Hospital as a CNA and worked for many years at
the Victoria County Hospital and at St. Rita
Hospital until ill health forced her to retire.
During her illness, Christene was able to remain
at home in the comfort of her loving family and
She enjoyed crocheting, crosswords and watching
birds. She was an avid reader and had a great
love for animals.
She is survived by sister, Margaret MacKenzie;
brothers, John and Winston Smith, Indian Brook;
nephew, Craig Matheson, Breton Cove; nieces,
Michelle Martell (Michael), Yarmouth, and Susan
Matheson (Stephen), Big Baddeck; grandnephews,
Michael (Morgan) and Owen Matheson, Breton Cove;
grandnieces, Nora and Kamryn Fownes, Big Baddeck.
Christene was predeceased by her parents, sister,
Evelyn Matheson, nephew, Brad Matheson, Breton
Cove, and a sibling in infancy.
There will be a visitation at St. Andrews
Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge, N.S.,
Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, 7-9 p.m. The funeral
service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29 at St.
Andrews Presbyterian Church at 11:30 a.m. with
Rev. Glen Davies officiating. Burial to follow at
Pine Hill Cemetery, N.S.
Many thanks to doctors, nurses and all staff of
Victoria County Hospital, Northside General and
the Cape Breton Regional, as well as EMS
paramedics, for the care and compassion afforded
to our loved one.

Marie passed away peacefully on Thursday at the
Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
She was an active member of the Royal Canadian
Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 83.
Surviving are sisters Colleen, Bernadette and
Judy; son Bernie; daughter Annette (Blair),
Francine (Glen) and Natalie (Jim) as well as 10
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and
special friend Shirley Pentcost.
Marie was predeceased by her husband of 46 years,
Bill; sons Billy and Michael and Brother Frankie.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on
Monday October 28, at Francis Funeral Home. Mass
of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family
Parish (formerly St. Pius X Church), Sydney Mines
October 29, at 10 a.m.

Edwin 'Stanley' Kendall

The death of Edwin 'Stanley' occurred peacefully
at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, P.E.I.
on Friday, October 25th , 2013 of Edwin 'Stanley'
Kendall of Summerside, P.E.I. and formerly of
Newfoundland, aged 69 years.
Stan was born on June 19th, 1944 on Ramea Island,
NFLD. to his parents Margaret Skinner (nee
Kendall ) and the late Dorcie Kendall.
Beloved husband of Joyce (Degan) Kendall and
loving father of Theressa Kendall (Jamie Willson)
of Ontario, Walter (Misty MacDonald) of Ontario,
Lori Burnell, Angie (Jason) Blacquiere all of
Summerside and Amanda (Mike) Garuk of Ontario.
Also lovingly remembered by his seven
grandchildren: Nathan, Matthew, Dakota, Kendall,
Eric, Haley, Lincoln and several nieces and
nephews. Survived by his sister Linda (Denis)
Chislett of Ontario.
Besides his father, Stan was predeceased by his brothers Wesley and Walter.

Charles Edward Reid, 83 of Sunrise Drive died
peacefully on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the
Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his family by
Born in Westmount he was the son of the late George and Mary Reid.
As a young man Charles was an avid athlete and
participated in numerous sports; softball,
badminton, and later became very active in the
Sydney Curling Club where he served as a
director. He was also a member of the Lingan Golf
and Country Club. For many years Charlie was
employed with Scotia Limestone and later retired
in the mid 1990's from Sydney Steel.
Surviving are his wife the former Joan McManus;
daughter, Carolyn (David) McPhee, Toronto and two
granddaughters, Claire and Julie; sisters, Joan
and Zelda. Charles is also survived by his very
close family members; Rev. Ora McManus, Bill
(Bernice) McManus and Carolyn (David) Winfield.
Predeceased by seven siblings.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr.
Reid. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday,
October 29 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima
Church. Rev. Duaine Devereaux and Rev. Frank
Abbass officiating. Interment to follow in
Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Pauline Collier (Higgs)

Pauline was a daughter of the late Ambrose and Armour Higgs.
Besides her grandchildren, she is also survived
by sisters Olive Tetford, Corinne Urquhart,
Gloria (Melrose) Wilson; brother-in-law James
Murchison, all of Sydney; and sister-in-law
Barbara Foster, Ontario; as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband Jim, daughter Carole and son
Alan, Pauline was predeceased by her sister
Frances Reeves; sister-in-law Anna Murchison;
brothers-in-law Charles Tetford, John Reeves,
Kenneth Urquhart, all of Sydney, and Ron Foster
and Bill Mutch, Ontario.
A loving wife and mother and bookkeeper for Cape
Breton County Library, Pauline was a very capable
homemaker who, with Jim, were gracious hosts to

With heavy hearts and great sorrow, we, the
family, wish to announce the passing of Vince - a
loving husband, father, grandfather, brother,
uncle and cousin, at the Cape Breton Regional
He was the 4th of 14 children to the late Dave
and Eva (Hillier) Flemming of Millville.
Vince worked as a stevedore for Marine Atlantic,
and also as a steward on MV Caribou, but his true
love, besides Liz, was truck driving. He was
known to all his trucker buddies as "Hungry
Farmer." He was a loyal driver for Capstick's
Trucking in Bras d'Or.
In the past few years, Vince enjoyed and took
great pride in his vegetable garden and well-kept
yard. Grass was to be mowed precisely!
He was a very proud Poppy to his eight grandchildren; he loved them dearly.
Vince is survived by his wife of 37 years,
Elizabeth (Young); sons David (Michelle), and
Joey (Shannon) of Peterborough, Ont., his eight
grandchildren; Tyler, Hunter, Jack, Nolan,
Hailey, Ainsley, Ella Rose and Josie, and two
special grand nieces, MacKenzie and Emily Mae.
Also left to mourn are his brothers; Arthur
(Mary), and Jack, both of Millville, and Bernie
(Sue Oliver), St. Catharines, Ont., and his
sisters; Mary Ann (Harry) Jackson, Conquerall
Bank, Carol (Ron) Theriault, Millville, Theresa
and Eva (Thomas Bevis), Halifax, Rose (Mark)
Powell, and Fran (Blake) Clothier, Tantallon,

Thomas Richard Corbett Sr., formerly of Sydney
and a 40-year resident of Stoughton, Mass.,
passed away at home on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.
He was the beloved husband for over 50 years to
Mary Dorothy (MacPhee) Corbett. He was the loving
father to Corrine of Stoughton, Thomas Jr. of
Georgetown, Mass. and Dorothy MacNeil (Darren) of
Waltham, Mass. He is also survived by his sister,
Mary Doyle (James), Peabody, Mass. and brothers,
Patrick and William Corbett of Sydney.
He was predeceased by his parents, William and
Katherine (Fewer) Corbett and a sister, Catherine

Judith 'Judy' Brophy

It is with deep sadness that we announce the
passing of Judith 'Judy' Ann Brophy on Tuesday,
Oct. 22, 2013, at home.
Born in Sydney on Aug. 18, 1950, Judy was the
daughter of the late Vincent and Margaret
Judy is survived by her sisters, Betty McCormick,
Jean Brophy, Patsy (Walter) Twerd; brothers,
Frank (Liz), Vince, Bobby (Mabel), Donnie, Tommy
and Terry; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Judy was predeceased by her
sisters-in-law, Bea and Delores, and
brother-in-law, Joseph McCormick.
Judy lived a quiet and simple life. She loved
sewing and reading. She loved the company of cats
and would enjoy a good laugh. Judy will be
remembered by her family and friends for being a
caring and loving person.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, Oct.
28, 2013, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with
Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take
place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

John 'Blair' Devoe
