ANNA YVONNE (GOUTHRO) LAFFIN - 66 yrs
LAFFIN, Anna Yvonne (Gouthro) Our Dearest, Though it has only been a few short days since
you left on your journey, our family is already experiencing the vastness of the distance
between us. While your pilgrimage to paradise brings you to the embrace of your mom, dad,
and saviour Jesus Christ, you have taken your sparkle, your smile, and your comforting
presence with you. Our lives will never be the same. Anna, age 66 of Millville, was born
in Toronto on May 24, 1953 and died Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional
Hospital. Anna worked at Sobeys for 20 years, brightening the lives of each person who
came through her checkout. However, her real work was loving people, accepting them, and
listening to them. None have been more blessed by her love than her loving husband of 46
years, her children, grandchildren, and the special friends she held close to her heart.
Though we ache in her absence, Anna’s love is a gift we carry with us. The love and
memories of Anna will be kept alive by her husband, Kenny; her children, Lance (Jill),
Terri (John) and Shannon (Adam); her grandchildren, Loughridge, Fynn, and Charlotte, and
her brother, Cliff. She is the daughter of the late Mary Jane (MacDonald) and Clifford
Gouthro of Tobin Road. Following cremation, we invite you to celebrate Anna’s beautiful
life, Saturday, November 16 at 6 p.m. at the John J. Nugent Firemen’s Centre in Sydney
Mines.

STEPHEN RICHARD ROSE -
ROSE, Stephen Richard It is with great sorrow that we, the family of Stephen Richard Rose,
announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in Sydney. Born in Boston,
Massachusetts, he was the son of Stephen Rose Sr. and the late Bernadette (Joe) Rose.
Stephen’s entrance into the world was described by his proud mother as "just like the
movies", as his mother went into labour and called for assistance during the Great
Blizzard of 1978 in Boston. With the streets not plowed and the city shut down, there were
major efforts to get healthcare personnel to her and Steve Jr. After Steve’s birth in an
apartment, makeshift sleds were made to transport mother and child from leftover plywood
found in a basement and pulled 85 feet over huge snow drifts to a waiting ambulance and
then to a heavy-duty truck to carry them to a hospital nearby. It was at that moment the
family knew it would never be boring with Steve around. Stephen was a proud father to his
four young children. He really cherished going on outdoor adventures with his children,
especially trips to the beach during the summer. Steve or ‘Dutty’ really enjoyed the
recreational sport of Tomahawk throwing with friends and family and then enjoying a nice
barbecue shortly after. He would also go on many hikes and explore any area around him out
of sheer curiosity. An avid video gamer, he would hilariously poke fun at his friends and
family he played against when he won. He attained his Grade 12 General Educational
Development (GED) and obtained various educational tickets for different areas of interest
to him. Steve earned a brown belt in karate in his younger years, as well. Stephen really
had a gift for drawing. As a young boy, he would hold up pictures against the window and
stencil out comic book images and eventually freehand many pieces of art as a hobby. He
really enjoyed meeting new people and striking up conversations with everyone he met. His
compassionate nature would lead him to try to help anybody in need and he was always
willing to lend a helping hand. Stephen enjoyed the finer things in life and really knew
how to have a good time. His big laugh will be one of the sounds missed by every one of
those left behind, but whenever you see a sticker (that is not supposed to be there)
anywhere around Cape Breton, you will know he stood there with a huge smile on his face
and mostly likely slapped it there. Little Steve really had his own impeccable style that
was noted by many. Stephen was playfully proud of his beard and was a tattoo enthusiast,
with each tattoo having a very interesting story attached to it. He was charismatic, with
a larger than life sense of humour and always ready for action, which meant that spending
time with Stevie was a time to be had. With adventure in mind, it did not surprise his
friends and family to hear he would travel across Canada with nothing more than a
backpack. We all trust that backpack is filled with everything you need wherever you are
now, and you can call us collect anytime. Besides his father, Stephen Sr., Stephen Jr. is
survived by his sons, Ethan, Ronin, Callum (Sara Planetta) and Wolfgang (Melanie Sue
Smith), all of Sydney; sister, Sherry (Darren) Rose-Morgan and family; brothers, Richard
(Teilah Bishop) of Sydney and Brad of Calgary, AB; and nephews, Xander and Wesley, along
with their mother, Katie Laybolt, of Sydney. He is also survived by his godmother, Beverly
Marshall and godchildren. The family would like to express their heartfelt thank you to
all of our aunts, uncles, cousins, best friends and extended family and friends throughout
this difficult loss. There are too many to list, but each of you know who you are. Stephen
was predeceased by his beloved mother, Bernadette (Joe) Rose; grandparents, Frank and Rita
Joe; grandparents, Mary Ann (Simon) Rose and Robert A. Rose; uncles, Robert Rose, Thomas
‘Tommy’ Rose, Francis ‘Junior’ Joe; and godparent, Basil Joe. There will be a celebration
of Stephen’s life held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2019, at Sydney Memorial
Chapel, with prayers at 6 p.m. by Deacon Tom Sylliboy. A private interment will take place
at a later date. Donations in Stephen’s name may be made to the IWK Health Center. Words
