Robert Peter “Bob” Mertens -
Robert ‘Bob’ Peter Mertens, 82, of Strasburg, Va., passed away on Sept. 24, 2014, at the
Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Va. There will be no viewing. A memorial service was
held Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at Woodstock Presbyterian Church, 142 E. Court St.,
Woodstock, Va., at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Veterans of
Foreign Wars National Home for Children and the Shriners Hospitals for Children. View

Jean Buchanan, 84, Grand Anse, passed away Sept. 27, 2014, at the Strait Richmond
Hospital, Evanston. Born in Balmoral, she was a daughter of the late of the late George
Frost. Jean was a member of the Black River United Church and a lifetime member of the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peter’s. She is survived by daughters, Myra (Mrs.
Max Holdright), Maitland Bridge; Beverly, Grand Anse; Carol Gibson, Houstan B.C.; Valerie
(Mrs. Donald Hussey), Coxheath; son, Lorne (wife Mary Beth), St. Peters; 12 grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister Alice MacIntosh,
Dundee, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bert Buchanan,
sister Christine MacInnis, brothers, Harold, Allan and George, half brothers, Joseph Savoy
and David Savoy. Resting in the River Bourgeois Funeral Parlor on Tuesday from 24 and 7-9
p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Black River United Church with
Rev. Karen Ross presiding, burial to follow in the Black River Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers donations to Strait Richmond Palliative Care or a charity of choice, appreciated.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.

Vernon Joseph Pettigrew

It is with saddened hearts that we are announcing the sudden passing of Vernon Pettigrew,
Vernon passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with
his family by his side.
Born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Vela and Annie (Bauld)
Vernon was a care free person who will be remembered as a painter, having painted numerous
homes in the New Waterford area over the years, he also enjoyed doing carpentry work,
often saying “He was a jack of all trades, but a master of none”.
In the 1960s he travelled with The Bill Lynch Show for several years, where he made many
friends, giving him years of memories and these stories he would talk about in his daily
conversations. He also enjoyed the time spent with his friend John Aucoin playing cards.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Lisa (Darren); son, Joseph (Allison). Vernon is
also survived by three beautiful grandchildren, Breanna, and Calvin Bradley and Josie
Power; all of New Waterford.
Besides his parents, Vernon was also predeceased by his wife Theresa (Power).
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J.
McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be
celebrated 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30, in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel with
Deacon Leo Penny officiating. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, River

On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, our loving husband (of 61 years), father, grandfather and
great-grandfather, Bertram Drover, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Cape
Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Hearts Content, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Thomas and Alfreda
An avid church goer and member of St Alban’s Church, Bert worked at the Sydney Steel
Corporation for 37 years and was well known for his superior carpentry skills throughout
the community. He was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast who enjoyed soccer in his
earlier years, as a member of the Broadway Ramblers, and golf in his later years with
family and friends.
Bert served overseas in during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Navy VR-North
Atlantic. He was a life- member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, where he served in
most office positions including many years as President and Treasurer of the branch and
provincially as the Cape Breton District Commander. Bert received numerous awards
including the Legion’s highest award, the Palm Leaf.
Bert is survived by his wife Lena 'Ollie' (Crane); daughters, Lena (Pierre) and
Barbara (Skeete) (James Lawrence); sons, Thomas (Donna), John (Kelly), Bert (Helen) and
Robert (Darlene); sister Mary Aitkens (Wally); 16 grandchildren and 16
He was predeceased by his brothers, Elias and William, sisters, Evelyn (Robertson), Fanny
Mae (Harvey) and Eileen (Coombes) and grandson Corey Skeete.
Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, from 7-9 p..m and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St.
Alban's Church, Whitney Pier with Archdeacon Brenda Drake officiating with interment
to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
