We are sad to announce the passing of Donald Ross MacLeod of Sydney N.S., on Saturday, May
23, 2015. Donnie passed away in his sleep after a pleasant day at Harbourstone Enhanced
Care in Sydney.
Born Dec. 31, 1927, the only son of Malcolm 'Mack' and Kathleen (Ross) MacLeod,
Donnie grew up in Sydney, where he attended Sydney Academy and went on to work for many
years in the general office at the Sydney Steel Plant. Donnie nurtured many interests in
his 87 years. He played basketball at Sydney Academy and the YMCA and gave back to these
communities as a referee for high school and junior college for many years. His sporting
passion extended to decades as a top-notch tennis and badminton player, hunter, horseman
and skier — and he always enjoyed a simple walk along the numerous scenic trails Cape
Breton has to offer. Donnie was also a keen birdwatcher and lover of Cape Breton culture
and a long time member of the St. Andrews United Church choir.
Donnie will be missed by his children, Isabelle, Ross (Beth) and Ian (Andrea), as well as
his grandchildren Rory, Colin and Miranda.
He was predeceased by his sister Norma MacLeod, but is survived by his sister Eileen
Our family is also grateful for the friendship of Helen Ellsworth and the kindness of her
daughter Pam. Lastly, Donnie’s family appreciates the care and service received at both
Parkland Cape Breton and Harbourstone Enhanced Care for making his final days serene and
At Donnie’s request there will be no service or viewing at this time. The family will have
a private internment at a later date.
Anyone wishing a memorial may make a donation in his memory to Sydney Academy or the

James Robert Jr. 'Timmy' Cann

Born: March 4th, 1944

It is with saddened hearts, that we the family announce the passing of our dear brother,
uncle and friend, James Robert Cann Jr. 'Timmy.' Timmy, age 71, passed Wednesday,
May 27, 2015, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, where he had been a resident for the
past few years.
Born in Glace Bay, March 4, 1944, he was the son of Flora (MacKinnon) and the late James
He will be sadly missed by his mother Flora; sister Judy Miller; niece Tamara
(Paul)MacKinnon; nephew Dwight ( Deanna) Miller; one grandnephew; and four grandnieces.
Timmy is also survived by his aunt May MacDonald and his uncle Howard MacKinnon.
Timmy was well known for his volunteer work at the Savoy Theatre, as well as helping out
many businesses in the downtown Glace Bay area.
Besides his father, he was also predeceased by his brother-in-law Dwight Miller and
several aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 28, 2015, from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral
Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, May
29, 2015, at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Interment
will be in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church foyer.
Donations in Timmy’s memory may be made to the Savoy Theatre (where Timmy made numerous
friends over the years) or to a charity of one’s choice.

Ronald 'Ron' Parsons
A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid, celebrating the life of Ron Parsons
will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2015 in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral home Chapel,
16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay.

It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of our dear
mother, Gladys Margaret MacNevin, on May 25, 2015.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Donald John and Katie Florence
(Matheson) MacLean and the last remaining member of her immediate family.
Gladys was an RN for many years, working in both the hospitals and as a health nurse with
DEVCO. She was a member of Knox United Church and the Glace Bay Hospital Alumni.
Surviving are daughters Dawn Stegen and Anne MacNevin, six grandchildren and one
Besides parents she was predeceased by her loving husband Claude Alden MacNevin; sister
Portia Willison and brothers Donald MacLean, Allister MacLean, Ranold MacLean.
In following Gladys’s wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under
the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. Funeral service will take place on Friday
May 29, 2015 at 2 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with Rev.
Duncan Roach officiating, with interment to take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at
a later date.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Marion is also survived by Bill Brown, father of her two special great nieces Corrinne
Brown and Vanessa Brown.
A funeral mass to celebrate Marion’s life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 10
a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, followed by a
luncheon at the K.O.C. Plummer Ave. All are welcome.
Burial will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Ann Elizabeth 'Betty' O'Toole

Ann Elizabeth 'Betty' O'Toole, 90, formerly of Baddeck , passed away Dec. 26,
2014, in Halifax.
Burial will be Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Cemetery in Baddeck.
Reception to follow in St. Michael's Parish Hall.
