In doing some "housekeeping", we again came across a request for help
from a Calgary searcher (from last December) about a John Nicholson of
Cow Bay. He was not in our Nicholson data bank, so I told the man in
Calgary I didn't know anything about him, but looking at him again, I
think he likely belongs to us, so am now trying to connect him.
He appears in the 1881 Cow Bay census living next door to Ewen (Hugh)
Nicholson and two houses down from William and Christy Nicholson.
Here is his census info:
Household Record 1881 Canadian Census
Name Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Occupation
John NICHOLSON M Male Scottish 53 Nova Scotia Sea
Jane NICHOLSON M Female Scottish 40 Nova Scotia C.
Charles NICHOLSON Male Scottish 19 Nova Scotia Seaman C.
John D. NICHOLSON Male Scottish 17 Nova Scotia C.
Abby Mary NICHOLSON Female Scottish 13 Nova Scotia C.
This John Nicholson would have been born around 1828, if the census
age were correct, but it does say place of birth was Nova Scotia. Our
Nicholsons did not come until 1840 so this John may be the son of a
cousin or an elder brother we don't know about or who the heck knows!
Apparently his son, John D., went out to Alberta and made quite a name
for himself in the police forces, being the subject of a book in 1944.
Any help, as always, gratefully accepted....
