It is with regret, we announce the death of Joseph Daniel MacPherson, 82, who passed away
peacefully on July 21, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born on April 4, 1934,
in Big Pond Centre, he was the son of the late William and Annie (Gillis) MacPherson. He
was employed for over 40 years with Maritime Tel. and Tel. Joe is survived by Beth, his
devoted and caring wife of 57 years. Although we shall miss his presence among us, all of
our families’ lives have been enriched through our connection to him. After raising a
family on Newlands Avenue, Sydney, Joe and Beth built a family home in Big Pond Centre,
where Joe enjoyed his retirement years on the Bras d› Or Lakes; boating, fishing, hunting
and always finding something to occupy his time. Proud of his Scottish heritage, Joe was a
man blessed with great integrity, who enjoyed recounting stories pertaining to earlier
times that demonstrated his unique sense of humour. Joe is also survived by his eight
children, Diane MacPherson, Victoria, B.C., Joe (Michelle), Sydney, Sandra (Mark) Hoole,
Victoria, B.C., Alan (Karen), Hammonds Plains, N.S., Yvonne (Alex) Libbus, Sydney, Will
(Laura), Sydney, Dana (Sean) Malloy, Cochrane, Alta., Elizabeth (Rocky) DiBello,
Stouffville, Ont., fourteen grandchildren, Matthew, Bryan, Austin, Brook, Nicole, Connor,
Kaleigh, Alicia, Jenna, Katelyn, Nicholas, Kennedy, Madison and Christian and his
remaining sibling, Marie MacEachen, Sydney. Joe was predeceased by his brother, Billy and
Hector and sisters, Sr. George Marie (CSM), Eunice, Minnie and Dorothy. Visitation will
take place on Sunday, July 24th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at T.W.
Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint
Mary›s Church in Big Pond at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25th with Fr. Anthony O› Connor
presiding and burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Honora ‘Nora’ (Chisholm)
Surrounded by her loving family and holding the hand of her husband Stanley, Nora passed
away peacefully at home on July 23, 2016.
Nora was the daughter of the late John and Kate (Ferguson) Chisholm of Sydney, N.S. and
was predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Joseph and John Chisholm.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Stan and their seven children, Paula (Ed
LeBlanc), Claudia (David Hughes), Michele (Bob Higdon), Clare (Joe Currie), Stephen (Mei
Xie), Monique (Tony Forbes) and Brendan (Lorena Sullivan Brothers). Nora was also survived
by her loving grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Justin, Kate, Neil, Genevieve, Sarah,
Philip, Morgan, Joseph, Caroline, Emily, Maggie, Aidan and Rowan as well as five
great-grandchildren, Jayna, Emma, Elaina, Seth and Zoey. Nora was also survived by her
sister, Marguerite (Arthur) Higgins; sister-in-law, Claire (Joe) Chisholm; a number of
nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly as well as a close group of wonderful friends and
Nora was a proud graduate of Holy Angels High School and went on to complete a diploma in
business. Nora was a woman of great faith, in 1974; she along with other women from her
parish founded the St. Joseph's Catholic Women's League chapter in North Sydney of
which she was a member for 42 years.
‘Nonie’ or ‘Nanu’, as she was lovingly called by her family, was a dedicated wife and
mother who along with Dad raised us in a very loving home. She stressed the value of
education and supported us in everything we did. The loss we feel is immense.
Visitation for Nora will take place at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North
Sydney on Tuesday, July 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church
in North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
Interment to follow in the family plot at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Edison Miller, on
July 23, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
He is survived by his son, Edison P. Miller, Dartmouth; daughter, Aimee (Wayne Bonnar)
Miller, Mira; granddaughter and the light of his life, Aaryanna Bonnar; sister, Edith and
special nieces, Anne Marie, and Barbara as well as several other nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Mary Miller in June 2015;
brothers, Douglas and James; also sisters, Mary and Jean.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 26, from 1-2 p.m. in
the S.W Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with funeral service to
follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.

Gerry ‘Soup’ Newell, 79, of Franklin, died July 1st, in the Medway Country Manor. He was
the husband of Mary C. (Milley) Newell, with whom he would have been married to for 60
years this month.
Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, N.S., March 22, 1937, the son of the late Jordan and
Myrtle (Morrison) Newell, Mr. Newell was raised in Glace Bay and had lived in Franklin
Gerry had been a deliveryman for Keigan Chevrolet in Franklin for several years. He had
previously worked as a machine operator for the Denison Corporation and prior to that he
had been a coal miner in # 20 Colliery, Glace Bay for 11 years with Dominion Coal
Gerry was an avid fan of the New England Patriots, the Boston Bruins and enjoyed camping
and boating. He was proud of always having his car in spotless condition.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Gerald E. Newell, of Douglas, Allan
E. Newell (Patricia), Cumberland, R.I. and Joseph W. Newell and his fiancé Kris, Franklin.
He is also survived by his brothers, Andy Newell (Marilyn), Glace Bay and Allan Newell
(Dorothy), London, Ont.
Gerry is also survived by his granddaughters, Cassandra and Christina Newell.
He was the uncle of the late Myrtle Ann Newell.
His funeral service was held in Franklin, MA.

Raymond was employed with Devco until his retirement, after 35 years in the coal mines. He
was a member of the Marconi Wildlife Association and had a love for hunting, fishing and

Adrian (Debbie); sister-in-law, Leone and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by wife, Ellen Elizabeth (Bowers); brother, Sonny
and nephew David
In following Raymond’s wishes cremation has taken place, there will be no visitation or
service; burial will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
