My grandfather and all his family were Jewish - they came to England in
the 1890s from Poland. Once naturalised, they anglicised their names.
Abraham became Aubrey
Hyman became Harry
Basia became Betsy
Szoel became Saul.
So it's quite possible that Mordecai became Mark!

I would like to know your opinion please on the following. I have a 3 x
granddad Mordecai who I cannot trace under that name in 1841. Do you
think that Mark who is in the right place at the right time is likely to be
Mordecai under a more common name? Mordecai was a jewish gent so perhaps he
wished to become more anglicised? I want to avoid going up the wrong tree.
