I was wondering if anybody had an interest in the names of RIDDING in the village of
Lowdham around 1830-1870? especially of William dob 1802 and Hannah RIDDING.
The info below has been collected by myself - Stephen is my gggrandfather. He had an elder
sister Elizabeth who was born July 1, 1832 and died May 22, 1833.
I have no knowledge as yet of William and Hannah RIDING. I would to hear from anybody with
any info or interest please!
Stephen, son of Thomas and Mary (nee CARNILL) Palin, was baptised at St Mary`s Lowdham
Parish Church records on October 31, 1833.
The family lived in Lowdham and Thomas - Stephen`s father - is stated to be a Framework
In the Census 1841, Stephen was living with his Uncle and Aunt - William and Hannah
Ridding in Lowdham.
Uncle William was a Frame work Knitter. Stephen was aged 7 years. Census 1841 page 3. Note
that Stephen surname was Paling.
In the 1851 Census, Stephen is noted to be aged 17 and a Framework knitter. He lives with
his Uncle William Ridding and his aunt Hannah in Lowdham. Stephen`s surname is seen to be
In the 1861 Census, Stephen was aged 27 and married to his wife Harriet (nee SIMON of
Bleasby)and lived in Lowdham. Their daughter Mary was one year old. His occupation was a
Coal Dealer. Census 1861, 2471 page 77, reg no. 121. Note that Stephen`s surname was
In 1871 Census, Stephen was living with his wife and family at The Grange, Lowdham. He was
37, Harriet was 32 and their daughters were Mary 11 years old - a Seamer - and Ann E.
aged 6 - a Scholar.
Stephen`s Uncle William also lived with them. He was 69 and a Widower. He was a Frame Work
Knitter. 1871 Census 3533 microfiche 2. page 75.
