I an looking for the first marriage of Edward ISLES (ILES/HILES)
What I have so far is -
Edward ISLES baptised 24th March 1777 at Clarborough. The baptism entry
suggests that he was born at Grinley, a hamlet in Clarborough parish. His
father was John ISLES, but the baptism does not state the mother's name.
However, I believe she was Mary ALLAND. John & Mary were married at
Clarborough on 26th Dec 1775.
I cannot find a record of Edward in the 1841 census, but his wife Jane (age
50), and a Hannah HILES (age 4, daughter or granddaughter?) are living at
West Stockwith. NOTE - At various times Edward was working as a boatman, so
could have been away from home for this census.
In 1851 Edward is at West Stockwith, working as an Ag. Lab., living with
wife Jane, (bn. about 1788 at Belton) and granddaughter Harriet.
On the 7th April 1857, Edward HILES, and Jane BROWN (nee ROBINSON), were
married at Gainsborough Registry Office. He was aged 77 yrs & she was aged
71 yrs. Both were widowed at the time of this marriage. The 1851 and 1861
census had stated that they were married at that time, but this was not so.
Edward died in April 1863, age 84 yrs. at Misterton, living at West
Stockwith at the time.
In 1871 Jane HILES was living on her own at West Stockwith, age 86 yrs.
Census states she was a waterman's widow.
Edward's wife, Jane HILES (nee ROBINSON) died in April 1876, age 90 yrs. at
Misterton, living at West Stockwith at the time. Present at her death was
her daughter, a Frances COOK. I do not know which of her marriages Frances
Edward and Jane appear to have had the following offspring - Hezekiah HILES
bn abt 1811 (1841 census), John Brown Hiles, 1816 at Stockwith (1861 census)
and Frances. There were almost certainly other offspring. It is not clear
whether these were issue from Edward's first marriage, Jane's first
marriage, or the issue of Edward and Jane when they were living together but
My query is -
Edward was a widow when he married Jane in 1857, so when and who did
Edward marry previously, and was there any issue from this marriage, and
when did his wife die?
My thanks in advance for any help on finding Edward's first marriage.
I think you're suggesting that Edward Isles lived with Jane Brown (nee
Robinson) for many, many years before making an honest woman out of her in
1857 when he was around 80 and she about 10 years younger.
It seems your real problem is finding if either was previously married.
You fail to say if you've looked for possible marriages around 1800 - 1810
when both would be aged 20-30. Have you looked for a marriage of Jane
Robinson to Brown?
I'm intrigued by John Brown Hiles b1816. Have you found this birth or
christening? Who was the father? It has all the hallmarks of a child born
to Mr Brown who later adopted the surname of his step father. The problem
All I can suggest is that you look for possible first marriages of both
Edward and Jane and try to match up christenings of any children.
Unfortunately it looks like their partners could have died any time between
1811 - 1841.
