This is my first ever reply to any list so hope it comes across OK.
I was born (1947) and bred in Nottm and came to NZ in 1981.I haven't yet looked into
NZ genealogy as all my searching is in England but if you Google 'army records 1860s
New Zealand' there are quite a few sites you can try. Then if you need a look-up
I'm sure one or more of the many helpful people on the list will do so.
I am at present sorting out my own surnames to send to the list and judging from all the
browsing I have done through many back months/years on NottsGen there are a lot of very
helpful people 'up there'!

My Great grandfather John Smedley was married in Sydney NSW Australia in
1868. He gave no parents name, no place of birth and gave his occupation as
stonemason.. On the birth certificate of his first child he says he was
born in Nottingham and that he was a Lace Maker. Oh, well I thought, he
came to Australia and there not being much work for a lace maker he had to
take whatever work he could get, hence the stonemason work. There was never
any personal information on any of his subsequent children's birth
certificates other than born in Nottingham.
My question is, how do I find the records of his army service in New
Zealand? We assume he left the UK somewhere from 1861 to 1866 and that he
may have joined up in that period of time. He obviously joined up for the
Sudan War in Australia as he was then married and living here. We have
found his name on the Nominal Roll at the Australian War Memorial.
