I've come in late, but I can't see where anybody has provided records to
back up their assertions.
I'd start with immigration. What is your source? I can't find a George
or Hester Barker arriving in Victoria in 1853 +/- 2 yrs.
The migration records should show ages, occupations, native place and
Like you, I can't find a marriage on FreeBMD. If they married c1838,
they should be in 1841 & 1851 UK census.
Have you looked there?
If any children were born overseas, what are the details?
I notice on VIC BDM that Hester died 1873. Her birthplace shows as Esse.
Is this Essex or Essendon?
If Essendon, it would suggest a marriage in Australia.
The same record list her husband as Lewis Barker, so you may need to
search for both Lewis Barker & George Barker.
Do you have his death ? I couldn't spot it on VIC BDM. Does it give
parents. Unfortunately, the two most likely places
to find his parents are a marriage or death certificate. But if those
details are not included, it is very difficult.
Finally, I'd suggest looking for death notices in Trove newspapers or
cemetery records on Cemindex or similar sources.

Subject: [NTT] George Lewis Barker
The person I am looking at is George Lewis Barker. The information I
have on him is from his sons birth certificate.
He says he is born in Nottinghamshire , about 1816-18, going by his age
when he arrived in Victoria, Australia, 1853.
The two children born in Aus are, George Lewis Barker jnr & William
He also states he married in Manchester in 1838 ,to Hester Howe, but
this can not be found.
So any clues on this chap would be great.
Regards, Janet Barker
