A friend of mine wondered if I could help trace his adopted father's family. His
father was born Forrest George Fryer JUDGE in Addlethorpe, Lincs in 1921. The adoption
certificate (1929) states that the parents were Nellie JUDGE and Charles FRYER, and that
he was adopted by Annie Louisa WARD (widow of Harry WARD, coal miner, deceased) who had
apparently fostered him. Annie lived in Vernon Road, Basford. My friend has discovered
that the cottage in Addlethorpe was owned by William ACRED.
I think I have found 3 of these people but I'd be interested to see (1) if you sleuths
can check that I have the right ones (2) if you can work out any connection between the
families (3) if there's anyone on the list interested in these families. I'm a bit
hesitant about getting too much info, so that I leave something for my friend to do - I
think he's going to get hooked!
There's a Nellie JUDGE on Arkwright St in 1911, servant to Bertie BALLINGALL.
She's born Kent, and seems to be daughter of Harry and Alice Judge from Frittenden,
Kent. Alice is in Pym St, Nottingham in 1911 (Harry is on his own in Featherstone, West
Yorkshire). I've got some of their census entries, and Alice appears to be from the
GURR family which is documented on Ancestry and FamilySearch. That all seems fine, if
it's the right Nellie, and I can't see another suitable one.
There's a Charles FRYER, living with wife Elizabeth nee Allwood on Brushfield St,
Nottingham in 1911. Again, he's not too difficult to follow, except to find out his
birth, which appears to be in Pana, Christian County, Illinois, USA! His parents appear to
be Robert and Sarah Ann Wheatley, both from Notts, but their trip to the USA falls between
censuses and before passenger lists, although there's a possible Robert and M.A. Fryer
on the Sidonian immigrating at Castle Gardens NY in July 1871.
William ACRED also has Nottingham connections. His son John moved there and was in Bertram
St in 1911, and I suspect his brother Charles was there too, but I'm leaving that for
my friend to sort out.
Annie L WARD is harder to trace. There's a possible marriage for Annie L KIRKBY and
Harry WARD in Nottingham in 1916, but I'm not sure about her.
My suspicion is that Nellie was shipped out to Addlethorpe for the birth, the child
adopted, and then she returned with most folks none the wiser to her indiscretion! But I
wonder whether the other families were related or even acquainted.
I'm not asking for detailed census searches - my friend can do that when he gets
addicted! - but if you have any thoughts, observations or, best of all, connections,
they'd be appreciated.
