If you search on Ancestry for Edwin John (no surname) age about 3, born
Paddington, you will find only one possibility - aged 4.
He is described as the son of Mary Ann Jutting (well that's what the
transcriber thinks the name is, and I cannot see it being any other).
However, she is 53, which would make it doubtful that she is the mother
having had to give birth at 49/50.
This is a possibility. Is this woman related to the boy's mother? Sister
perhaps? Aunt? You will have to do some research on her to find her maiden
name (she was widowed by the 1871 census).
Sorry but this is the only lead I can offer. Like most brick walls, it will
take a lot of research to find out, and take you down a lot of blind alleys.

Subject: [NTT] Edwin John FRENCH b.1868
I wondered whether someone might be able to find my Gt Gfather on the 1871
census? I've been searching for several years and still cannot find him.
Edwin John FRENCH was born in Paddington, London to Ann FRENCH (unmarried)
On the 1871 census, Ann is working as a domestic cook at Tollerton Rectory,
Notts but I cannot find anything for Edwin John.
In September 1871, Ann marries John MIDDLETON in Nottingham. At some point
between the wedding day and the 1881 census, they all move to Aylestone,
Leics. Edwin John uses the surname MIDDLETON for the rest of his life.
Any help would be most appreciated :-)
