I remember the tinker on the bicycle, who walked slowly down the street
calling "Scissors sharpened!". I also remember the collectors who walked
down the street calling "Any old iron, rags, bones!".
I was living and working in a remote area of China two years ago, living
well away from the tourist traps, and every day persons would walk down the
street calling the same sorts of things. Ten years ago, in much the same
sort of situation in a northern (predominantly Indian) town in Fiji, the
same sorts of occupations existed.
Seems to me that these sorts of people and their occupations are a natural
by-product of the society and particularly technology of the age they live
in, regardless of the country. When conditions are suitable, they occur..
