There may be nothing on the death certificate to tell the GRO or local
office who the person was married to
Have you tried for any burials?
And wills ?
Are you able to check the age at death or was it before that was added
to the GRO index?
You don't give a year so it may not be so easy for one or the other but
perhaps worth checking out
