This is an extract from my recent posting.
"For instance, Samuel Owen COOKE's grandfather, Thomas Timms COOKE, was
recorded on the 1871 census at "Alms Houses, Pilcher Gate" and I had thought
that he had perhaps fallen on hard times. However, on his interment details
in 1871 his occupation was listed as "Clerk to the local board of health."
Quite an important job I would imagine."
The date for Thomas Timms COOKE's interment should have read 1874. On the
1871 census his occupation was recorded as "living in an alms house". Given
that he was 79 at the time I presumed that he had "retired", although
technically there was no such thing at that time. Hence my surprise in
finding the occupation as a clerk at the time of his death.
