There was, about that time, great interest by men in the relatively new "rifle" with it's rifled barrel, There were "Rifle Brigades" and Rifle clubs set up in many parishes for men to learn to use the new kind of weapon that didn't use muzzle-loading powder and bullets (although some early rifles were still muzzle-loaded).. I don't know what units existed in the Lowdham area, but some Directories of the 1890s and early 1900s might make reference to them.
This sounds like a good question to ask the Reference Librarian at the Nottingham County Library.

Can any of you regular readers/responders answer this question for me?
About the time my ancestor was born in Lowdham in 1792, the world was
on the cusp of the Napoleonic Era. Standing armies were
frequent. Do we know if any regiments were quartered near Lowdham at
any time? Were there local militias? Perhaps his father was not a
local, but a soldier?
Is there anyone going to Notts Archives who can help me with two
marriage lookups? From the Notts FHS index:
GASCOYNE, John m. MELLORS, Mary Ann 1860 05 05 GREASLEY St Mary
GREGORY, John m. WARDLE, Mary Ann 1866 11 23 EASTWOOD St Mary
I am trying to determine which of these Mary Anns is the daughter of
Edmund Wardle and Sarah Mellors/Mellows. She was born as Mary Ann
Mellors just before her parents married, but id found in censuses as
Wardle. My tree has long had her marriage to John Gregory, but a recent
DNA match strongly suggests that the marriage to John Gascoyne is the
right one If I buy the certificate for this marriage , I may still find
that the father's name is blank, so I am reluctant to do that.
Thanks in advance,

I would try to check the St Nicholas bpt PRs for 1806 to make sure Joshua hasn’t been missed, or that the registers are damaged for that year etc.
>I don't have a Joshua, but Sarah Ann Saxton was my great-great grandmother. Her parents came from Mapperley, Derbyshire, and she lived in New Brinsley.
A while ago, I discovered that there had been a Mormon church in the
area, whose members were subjected to victimisation by some of the
locals. Sarah Ann's brother, Solomon, moved to Utah in 1857 to join the
Mormon community there.
