Just wondering if anyone can assist me in locating some information about an elusive relative by the name of Bernard Gordon.
I believe he was been born circa 1815, and in 1840 was living in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. Whether he was born in this area or not, I do not know.
He left England and arrived in New Zealand sometime between 1840 and 1848, and returned to England some 20 years later. He had no children in New Zealand that I am aware of.
I am desperate to find details of his birth, death and family, but being in New Zealand, I am limited to what I can find on the internet (which unfortunately for Bernard, is not that much).
If anyone is able to help me find out anything at all, I would be very grateful.
Hello from wintery Melbourne, OZ
I recently subscribed to your List and I am looking for the family of Thomas & Elizabeth Towe about 1790 and their family some of whom moved to Portsea. Hampshire about 1803.
Not sure where they came from in Notts, but out GG Grandfather indicated that HIS PLACE was Nottingham, on his children’s birth reg’s.
Thank you in advance for any advice.
After a decade following other lines, I am now revisiting this part of my
Nottinghamshire connection. My records, many of which were contributed or
refined by listers back then, have -
1 William HALL son of Elizabeth HALL being baptised at
Scrooby on November 23, 1774
2 Hannah HURST baptised at Everton to William and Mary
HURST on June 24, 1787
3 Samuel Harris born in 1793 to Robert HARRIS and Mary
MARPLE, who were married on September 1, 1790 in Worksop Priory
4 Hannah HURST married William HALL at Bawtry on October
5 What children did Hannah and William have? I have
notes of several possibilities, including Mary at Everton in 1805, William
at Southwell in 1809, and Ann at Oxton in 1810, but none confirmed.
6 Robert HALL baptised at East Retford on June 19,
1814, mother Hannah HALL, but the name of the father was apparently not
7 William HALL, "abode Retford" was drowned at South
Muskham, and buried there on July 13, 1814, aged 40.
8 Hannah HALL, a widow, married Samuel HARRIS at Everton
on March 6, 1815
9 Hannah and Samuel had at least five children (Maria,
Ann, John, Thomas and Hannah) between 1816 and 1828
10 In the 1841 census Robert and Hannah HARRIS are living
next to Robert HARRIS and his wife Ann at Ranskill.
a. Samuel is shown as age 47 and born in the county.
b. Hannah is shown as age 50 (so 50-54) and born in the county
c. Robert is shown as age 25 (so 25-29) and born in the county
d. Ann is shown as age 35 (so 35-39) and born in the county
11 In the 1851 census
a. Samuel is shown as age 56 and born at Worksop
b. Hannah is shown as age 64 and born at Everton
c. Robert is shown as age 36 and born at Retford
d. Ann is shown as age 42 and born at Babworth
After reviewing my data, and revisiting my sources, there are still many
unanswered questions, including
A Is the William HALL at points 1, 4 and 6 the same person, as
seems likely to me?
B Is the Hannah at points 2, 4 and 5 the same Hannah, as again
C If this is so, why would there be no entry for the father on
the baptism of Robert, or at least a note by the officiating clergyman that
perhaps the parents had separated and the husband was not the father?
I am hoping that someone connected to the family, or with local access to
data, may have sources I have not yet located, or had access to, in order
to move the problem to the next stage.
