Subject: [NJGEN] nice changes at
findagrave.com
www.findagrave.com
I use
Findagrave.com and have had some great successes. Just the other day,
I browsed the internments at one small cemetery in Rome, NY, that I had
visited in 1998. I found one of my family graves posted but noticed that his
sister's grave was missing, probably because the marker is no longer
legible. Luckily I had photographed it in 1998 so I uploaded the photo and
data yesterday. In 1998, I could only read the Jane B part, but from
location and an old DAR cemetery listing I able to identify the marker as
belonging to my Gibson line. While I was browsing the cemetery list, I also
noticed another person in my database and connected her to her married name
and death. Great find.
So,
Findagrave.com allows you to enter the birth and death with places, a
biography, grave inscription, notes, plot location, and now you can connect
families together. So, for Jane B, I was able to connect her to her mother
Phebe by typing in her mother's memorial code. This, by the way, was the
first time I had seen Phebe listed and I was very excited because I've been
hunting for her grave for a long time. I placed a request for someone to
photograph her grave as well. Since I did not enter her brother's
information, I was not able to add to his information, but you can email the
original poster, request a transfer of ownership (say if someone surveyed a
whole cemetery and wanted to assign family members to that listing), add a
photo, and leave flowers and a note.
Besides finding dead relatives, I've also connected with people working on
the same line who either post a grave that I'm looking for or who leave
flowers.
If you've posted graves, I urge you to update your listings to fill in the
new fields.
