Subject: [STATE-COORD] Proposed Bylaws Amendment
************ Please disseminate to other Project Mail Lists
*****************
There is ongoing discussion within the projects about the bylaws amendment
proposed by WVGenWeb. I know there's been a lively discussion of the
proposal, with explanations given, but I'm unsure if any of the explanations
are filtering down to the CCs if they're not subbed to the State
Coordinator'Coordinator'<WBR>s mail list. Please share this note with ot
subbed to the above lists.
This proposed amendment that WVGenWeb has sponsored seeks to eliminate a
very serious problem. When a person clicks the logo of something, they do
so expecting to be taken to the page that the particular logo represents.
There are a few unscrupulous individuals who are deliberately linking to
pages that are devoted to destroying the USGenWeb Project and that present
the USGenWeb Project in an unfavorable light. It should not be necessary to
tell these people that they cannot misuse the logo, but it seems it is
necessary with a certain few.
The statement is "IF linked, a state project logo may only be linked to the
appropriate state site." That says that the KYGenWeb state logo shouldn't
be linked to the ALGenWeb state site. Make sense to me - why would a KY CC
be using the KYGenWeb logo to link to anything other than the KYGenWeb state
site? If a state has rules and they say where to put the logos, the state
rules are applied first. The bylaws will only cover those that are not
protected. This proposal does not say that the logo must be linked (either
national or state), it only limits where a possible link will take an
unsuspecting visitor.
I know that there's a lot of discussion going on out there on the different
lists. If there are questions, the AB is glad to help answer them if they
can.
