Greetings to all,
The Franklin Historical Society was chartered in 1996 to preserve the rich
heritage of Franklin Boro, New Jersey. In concert with other local efforts
such as The Sterling Hill Mine and The Franklin Mineral Museum,
Franklin Historical Society has presented and augmented local events for the
purpose of educating our membership and the public. Franklin Historical
Society is a non-profit , educational organization.
Past events included guest speaker Dr. Pete Dunn of the Smithsonian Inst and
other local favorites speaking on such topics as: Mining, Minerals,
Industrial Overviews, Transportation and Economy, Immigration, Ethnic
Diversity, Preservation and Renovation, Geology and Hard Rock Techniques,
History of Iron Mining and the people groups that built our heritage and
retell it first hand!.
Sunday March 22, 1998 saw an good outing of persons at our Annual Volunteer
Appreciation Day.
Several 'old timers' that had worked in the mines were informally
interviewed roundtable. With video camera rolling, the discussion lasted
short of 3 hours. This tape will be invaluable for archival and future
discussions.
This is a small sample of the educational opportunites available at Franklin
Historical Society.
Franklin Historical Society offers a quarterly newsletter, "The ZincTown
Times" available through its' membership, sponsored trips to Ellis Island,
and a full calendar of events planned throughout 1998.
We are proud to have a progressive membership dedicated to preserving the
past for the future!
F.H.S. recently renovated and maintains its own Heritage Museum, which was
the "time office" of the old
N.J.Zinc Company. We invite you to visit us on the web at
http://www.serve.com/Franklin or Stop by our museum, weekends at 95 Main
Street, Franklin NJ 07416
Regards,
Charles Cacioppo
