*STATE ARCHIVES HOURS UNCHANGED; Library resumes Saturday hours*
Many NJ history list members will have already seen the following
message posted by the New Jersey Library Association, announcing the
news that the State Library will resume Saturday hours for the public
this week:
"Great news - New Jersey State Library will be opened on Saturdays
beginning this Saturday, (September 12th) thanks to an additional
appropriation of $50,000 from the New Jersey State Legislature. This is
the first time in nine years that the State Library will be open on
Saturdays. Tell your patrons."
This is great news, indeed. However, library users--especially those
doing New Jersey genealogical and local history research--need to know
that the State Archives, located on Level 2 of the Library building,
will NOT be open on Saturdays. The Archives is administered separately
from the Library, so the Library's Saturday hours funding does not apply
to the Archives. Also, the State Archives is well into preparations for
relocating its collections to larger, permanent facilities next year--an
intensive process that requires the closing of many series of records
for inventorying, rehousing, and labeling.
We regret this temporary inconvenience, but look forward to opening our
new facility next year, and will endeavor to restore our public hours on
Mondays and Saturdays in the future, with the Legislature's support.
