nj_history folks,
The letter below comes from esteemed nj_history subscriber Greta
Kiernan. Once again, friends, please share your thoughts on NJ local
legacies with the list. (I know you're getting tired of hearing me say
this.)

Hi Marc.
Here I am at my new job, working for Congressman Rush Holt in the
12th Congressional District Office. Among a myriad of other
responsibilities, I have been asked to work on the Library of Congress
Bicentennial "Local Legacies" program. The Library will celebrate its
200th Birthday in 2000, and is conducting this nationwide project to
document significant examples of state and local cultural traditions for
inclusion in its collection. Each Member of Congress is asked to sponsor
projects by identifying at least one (and not more than five) community
based cultural traditions with her/his District. As I understand it, the
purpose is to document America's grassroots heritage and provide a
snapshot at the end of the century of that heritage as gathered from every
Congressional District. The Library of Congress staff will work with
Congressional offices and the chosen projects. The creatively drawn 12th
Congressional District covers all of Hunterdon County, and portions of
Monmouth, Middlesex, Mercer and Somerset. The good news is that it sounds
like an exciting project; the bad news is that we need to have identified
local project(s) by the end of March. Do you have any suggestions? Any
ideas for further contacts. Thanks, as always. P.S. Please don't change
your email system - I love reading it all!
