Hi all,
My name is Heather Jones DeGeorge and I am also running for the State Coordinator position
for the NJGenWeb. Currently I am a co-Assistant State Coordinator with Peggy. This state
has been home all of my life and I have had 24 NJ addresses to memory in Bergen, Union,
Middlesex, Ocean and Somerset counties. Additionally, I have had relatives in Atlantic,
Camden, Hunterdon, Warren, Essex and Hudson counties--visiting often. My husband is
eternally grateful for my back-road knowledge!
I've been involved in genealogy research for over 7 years--the last 5 of them HEAVILY
involving the internet (since I am a computer geek by formal profession). My research
experience includes not only my own family (back to 1757 in Wales), but families and
research for paying clients, teaching and mentoring almost all in NJ. Currently I have
just finished my third article regarding cemetery research for NGS Newsmagazine. In
addition to being co-Assistant State Coordinator and CC for Somerset County in NJ, I'm
also a heavy contributor to the USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project and have
cataloged all of the known and found cemeteries for my county (72 to date) with addresses,
links to map locations and links to transcriptions (where possible). I administer the
NJSOMERS mailing list and two genealogy-related websites which I created, own and host
myself.
If elected I would also like to see some special projects take shape whether they are
assigned to individuals or to teams where time might not permit an individual to take on
the work. Some of my ideas include a section of NJGenWeb to direct new NJ researchers to
resources that cover the entire state, the rules and pitfalls of dealing with them and
direction to their potential counties (and their coordinators) based on the information
they have. I'd like to implement a forum where we might be able to help them get to
the correct location/resource. Rather than build new repositories, I'd like to see us
uniformly push the use of existing and grossly underutilized repositories that are free of
charge to us where possible. Where a need exists for new ones, I'd like to get them
up and running. I'd like to see common elements on each county page... not forcing
the same look and feel necessarily, but the same TYPES of information; and I am VERY
willing to help each coordinator!
if their own time doesn't permit or if they're struggling to find or create
online information.
I think that there are CC's and ACC's who may have more time to give than others;
and some with expertise in one area that others could benefit from. I'd like to
create an environment where we can benefit from what each of us has to offer to the
rest--be it time or "teaching". Across this state is a wealth of knowledge that
we and our researchers can all benefit from. I feel certain that I can provide the
leadership needed to organize everyone's strengths, inputs, desires and dislikes into
situations that provide for the common good. We are a TEAM; but as a volunteer myself I
know the headache that teamwork can sometimes be if not managed properly when new projects
and issues come forth.
I hope to serve you in the future...
