Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

RE: URGENT--NJGenWeb Elections
I have been reminded that since NJGenWeb has not formally adopted bylaws, that our election process has no legal precedent. Therefore, there are in fact, no guidelines on how NJGenWeb must hold an election.
Due to the length of time and effort that would be required, on the part of our regional representatives, to hold a state election, I am instead selecting the NJGenWeb KISS method for the CURRENT SC election process. (Hopefully the next time an election is held we will have agreed upon bylaws and protocols for how and when it will be held).
Please read this ENTIRE message before you reply.
As acting SC of NJGenWeb, I am requesting a ROLL CALL VOTE be called immediately for the election of the NJGenWeb State Coordinator position.
CANDIDATES:
---Jeff Lane, County Coordinator of Burlington County
---Janice Brown, County Coordinator of Atlantic, Bergen & Gloucester Counties, and former ASC of NJGenWeb
BIOGRAPHIES:
****JEFF LANE****
My name is Jeffrey Lane and I am running for the New Jersey Genweb
State Coordinator position. I am excited about New Jersey genealogy
as I have many ancestors who lived there. I am currently the County
Coordinator for Burlington county where most of my ancestors were.
I have worked on genealogy for nearly ten years - and technology has
really changed things for us. I have experience and talent in making
webpages so I feel I could offer a lot for this project. Please consider
voting for me; and I look forward to working with you on opening doors
to our past and helping others to also....
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Lane
****JANICE BROWN****
I have been a member of USGenWeb since March 2002 for New Hampshire
(three townships). Early in 2003 when I moved to New Jersey, I adopted
Gloucester County. At that time the county site consisted of a couple
of pages, and I have done my best to improve it, and provide valuable
research material that my visitors requested. [SEE with Waybackmachine: http://web.archive.org/web/19981201191132/www.rootsweb.com/~njglouce/ ]
SEE it now.. http://www.nj.searchroots.com/Gloucesterco/index.html
My background is in marketing, computer software, web page design, writing,
and fund raising. I ran my own web design business, and was a contributor
to Sams.net book, "Internet Unleashed." I've been an amateur genealogist
for about 25 years. I'm also an avid history buff, and maintain a blog
about New Hampshire (called "Cow Hampshire").
In addition to my experience with web design (I designed and maintain our
NJGenWeb state web site), I am also well versed with email/mailing lists
(I moderate the NJGLOUCE/Gloucester county list).
I have not found a single ancestor (so far) that was either born in New Jersey,
lived here, or possibly even passed through :D That does not seem to be an
impediment to my helping people research their family tree in this state.
I appreciate the time and effort that each one of you, as volunteers, invest in NJGenWeb, in order to make it a reality.

Just an update on recent changes within NJGenWeb.
1. Stephanie Faycik, the current coordinator of Ocean County, has adopted Monmouth County from Michelle Tucker Chubenko. . Thank you Michelle for the time you took, and the wonderful care you gave to that county's web site. Michelle will continue to coordinate Warren County.
2. I have formally adopted Cape May County. If you have a link on your web site to this county, you will need to change it to the new URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~njcapema/
3. I have sent email to a few of you asking about your town coordinators list. If you have not responded to my email, would you please so do (I need to know how many of your town coordinators are missing in action).
4. For those of the town coordinators who have been answering this roll call, we know you are there :)
5. We are in the process of obtaining assistance from USGenWeb to hold an election for NJGenWeb. Hopefully that will happen soon. From the responses received there will be two people on the ballot... myself and Jeff Lane. If this is not correct, and you would like to nominate yourself, please do so within the next couple of days.
6. We currently have two counties up for adoption--Sussex and Somerset. We have had an inquiry, and have a potential coordinator for Sussex.
Thanks everyone

FORWARDED FROM THE STATE-COORD MAILING LIST
To the NJGenWeb Project:
In accordance with the Grievance Committee Procedures, the Advisory Board has received
and reviewed the qualifications and made recommendations on those members who volunteered
to be on the initial Grievance Committee. The slate of committee members is listed
below and will remain open for member comment for a period of ten days. After that
date, the board will vote to accept or reject the slate based upon the discussions
and member input at the first opportunity.
We wish to thank all those who volunteered. As always happens when there are more
volunteers than positions, the selection process was difficult.
For the initial appointments to the committee we selected those members who either
expressed life experience in handling grievances with mediation and arbitration
through their employment, and those who have experience in training others. We
also heavily favored those who have a familiarity with the process itself due to
input into the committee or other processes similar to the GPC. These individuals
have a hard job to establish the committee and to recruit and train volunteers.
Individuals with experience in the area and with the procedures will help significantly.
CC/LC Representatives:
Ray Ensing - CC CAGenWeb, MTGenWeb and MNGenWeb - 2 years
Cheryl Rothwell - CC ILGenWeb - 2 years
Bob Sweeney - CC PAGenWeb - 2 years
SP Representative:
Alice Warner - Tombstone Project - Arkansas/Archives FM - Iowa
SC Representative:
Sharon Craig - ASC Indiana - 1 year
At Large Representatives
Sharyl Farrell - CC - 2 years - 1st year as Grievance Coordinator
Bill Utterback - CC KYGenWeb - 1 year
Please feel free to send your comments to myself, Mike Peterson the Representative

Subject: [NJGEN] Happy New Year roll call & news
Hi all... hope your New Year is off to a wonderful start. It's about to get
a bit more wonderful! ;)
I think it's best for me to resign as SC. I completely appreciate the
confidence and trust you guys had to put me in this position, but the things
that have been keeping me from doing a better job are just not temporary
enough. They're temporary for certain, but this project has stagnated for
too many years to fall under NEW leadership that isn't going to plow forward
with the things that really need to be done. I held off thinking it would
get better "soon" and it's just not. I don't think it would be fair to any
of us for my to continue to hold the title and not really do the job the way
it's been done and issuing what looks like empty promises or "all talk/no
action". To that end, I need to give up Somerset Co., too. I've had
nothing but problems in uploading new pages and I think it just smacked me
in the face with "it's time".
I've been part of this project for a LOT of years. I really hope that the
last 10 months won't be held against me if and when I return. It is because
I value the work and the project that I am willing to hand it over instead
of cyber-squatting to ensure that NJGW reaches it's full potential. We are
the heart of America's Revolution. We should present our resources and
knowledge accordingly.
When I was elected, it was by a VERY narrow margin over Janice Brown--who
is now our ASC. I e-mailed Janice and she said that she would be happy to
take over, but only if the decision was unanimous among the CCs. You need
to make your wishes known in your roll call response. If you would like to
oppose that vote and therefore nominate yourself for SC, you need to do so
when you respond to this roll call. We will then notify USGW that another
election needs to take place. Since nobody notified me that they would be
away, we'll gather the responses through Sunday night, January 7, 2007
(midnight ET). Until it is resolved, Janice Brown will be the acting SC.
I wish every one of you the best. I am very grateful for the faith you
had in me. I hope that by withdrawing, I am also serving you well.
Best regards,
--Heather Jones DeGeorge

I don't want the job as SC either. After reading Al's email, I have a few
comments also. I don't mind a roll call once a month, but I don't want it to
be an upset if I missed a roll call. I've seen some states where it does
cause an upset.
I think we should have SOME requirements for the county and town pages, but
I don't think we should have stringent rules about that. It has long been a
commitment of those who adopt these county sites to be creative within one's
abilities and talents, and to provide information for the general research of
that community. It is sometimes difficult for some coordinators to obtain
lots of data to add to a page. Often times items are donated to the
coordinator after a period of being associated with that county, but sometimes if the
coordinator is not very outgoing with people on a mail list, they may not
receive as many donations as another might receive.
I would like to see those of us who do have access to materials from another
county other than the one we are managing to provide assistance to those
other coordinators. Say, if I had materials or access to materials for Ocean
County, then I would donate those to that coordinator, and if they had
materials for Hudson then they would donate those to me for the Hudson site.
I believe that each site should have one of the approved National Logos on
their site, with links back to the national page, links to the state page, and
if they have TC's, then links to those pages. I would like to see some
structure for how the TC's should also have that same requirement, if possible.
I know that some of them that are currently on board do not have a NJ or US
National logo on their site.
I also don't believe there should be any requirement on where they should be
hosted, but I don't see that as an issue. I would like to know that it is
not an issue.
I would like to know that a page has been updated at least a couple of times
a year. I know some states have counties that have not been updated (or at
least the date that it indicates it was last updated) since 2001.... others
since 2004. To me, that indicates that the person with that county isn't or
doesn't want to do anything for that county. I don't believe they should be
allowed to keep that county if they go a year or more since they even update
the date on the main entry page. I don't know if that has ever occurred in NJ
as I am fairly new in this state, but have seen it elsewhere.
I too love the unique quality of going to different sites and seeing
different manners in displaying their sites and their data. It gives me more ideas
and makes me a little braver each time I try something new. I would like to
see a "support group" for any potential techies in our midst that could help
with questions or problems with a page, if we have them here. Also, the new
USGenWeg Help pages that Ellen Pack started is a great site for that.
That's about all I have to say. I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I
think we need to all say what there is for us about our community and what we
would like to see. Thanks so much for reading.

At this risk of being thrown out of this project, I'd like to add my $0.02 cents to this discussion.
First, I don't want the job as State Coordinator. I already have enough volunteer activities on my
plate.
Second, I think we should review the duties of the State Coordinator as well as the County/Town
coordinators as posted on the USGenWeb site. The state coordinator's duties are:
- Maintain a state list
- Maintain a mail list of coordinators
- Maintain the state page (and I include a number of requirements found on USGenWeb here)
- "Periodically check to make sure that all the county pages are adhering to the few USGenWeb
Project requirements"
- respond to public and/or county coordinator inquiries
- Recruit/startup help for county coordinators
That's it folks. No requirement on structures for county pages. No requirements on where they are
hosted, in fact, 5 of our 21 counties are not hosted on rootsweb. (And I did not check the town
pages). No requirement for a monthly roll call.
The heart and soul of the USGenWeb project is the county page. They are all different, all unique.
We have a state coordinator to step in where things go astray from the philosophy. But not to
dictate how things will be done. Not the SC role as defined in USGenWeb.
Sorry for ranting like this, I see this project going off in the wrong direction.

I'm not wishing to start a debate on this issue, yet I would like to add my
opinion on some of the discussion points so far.
1. I appreciate having a monthly roll call. This lets the SC know that the
CC and TC are active and responding.
2. Rootsweb does have their minimum requirements of what needs to be
included in a site hosted on their servers, I feel it is well within the
responsibility to have the SC list some requirements that bring a conformity
to the sites contained within a state. Personally, I haven't felt that our
SCs have placed structure requirements, but have listed things that need to
be included. I still feel as though I have the creative license to build my
county sites as I feel inspired and just need to include a few things that I
probably would have included anyway.
3. In my experience, I have found a wealth of information on both state and
county sites and, at times, I've obtained more information from the state
site than I have from some of the county sites.
4. I do feel that if there is a concern over whether a SC is asking more
than should be required, that the issue should be brought to a discussion
within this list and, if needed, brought to a vote. Personally, I don't
think it will be necessary as our current SCs have been very helpful and
willing to pay heed to suggestions and concerns (at least that has been my
experience with them).
I am proud of our state and county sites and I spend quite a bit of time in
researching many of the NJ counties as my mother's family have lived in
various NJ counties since the 1600s. I have seen some aspects on other sites
that I would like to include in mine and others that I feel are not very
effective. Websites should be fluid and able to change and adapt depending
upon the needs of the users as well as the changes in technology. The NJ
mailing list helps in discussing these issues as well.
I wouldn't want anyone to take offense at my statements. These are my
opinions and I am very grateful for this opportunity to provide a service to
those individuals and families seeking their family history.

I'll gladly support any decision that is made re: SC. I'd like to express my
appreciation to Heather for all her hard work. I've been a CC for such a
long time and there have been times that I have been very lax in my duties
due to personal and professional obligations and am grateful for the
patience shown by the SCs over the years. Managing a county or state site is
very time-consuming as the more information you place on your site, the more
links there are and then you need to spend the time to consistently check
the status of those links. I've been working on that over the holiday season
and am still not finished.
For what it's worth, I've spent time researching on a variety of state and
county sites and I am proud to be part of the NJ team. We have a terrific
site and great leadership.

Jeff,
Thank you for the kind words about both Heather and myself.
Just so you realize, in your statement that you would like to volunteer to be State Coordinator, it means that an election will be held, and in essence, you are placing your name on the ballot. I have not resigned my position, and I intend to run for the SC position also.
Other Coordinators have until January 7th to respond and also add their names to the list of those to be included on the ballot.
I made it clear to Heather that if the approval of county coordinators was not 100% for me becoming the SC of NJGenWeb, then I was anxious to hold an election so that everyone would feel comfortable with our project's leadership.
Just to clarify things... are you stating you are nominating yourself, and that you want to participate in an election for the position of State Coordinator of NJGenWeb? A Yes or no answer will do :D
Once the need for an election is determined, any nominees will be able to send a statement, through this email list, to detail qualifications, goals, etc.
Janice

Thanks for your help Heather and Janice - you've done a great job!
I would like to volunteer to be the State Coordinator. I don't know
exactly what is needed for the bylaws but I could study it.
I have some good ideas for the structures of the county websites. But one main
goal I would plan for is to influence rootsweb to add more functionality to their
host. Additional programming languages and a database would be extremely useful.

Heather,
I would like to wish you and your family a Happy, Healthy and Joyous New
Year!! I'm sorry to see you leave the project, but can understand about
those never-ending commitments and the lack of time. :) We'll miss you!!
And you have my vote for Janice as SC. She's done wonderful job
stepping in and helping out!

Hi all... hope your New Year is off to a wonderful start. It's about to get a bit more wonderful! ;)
I think it's best for me to resign as SC. I completely appreciate the confidence and trust you guys had to put me in this position, but the things that have been keeping me from doing a better job are just not temporary enough. They're temporary for certain, but this project has stagnated for too many years to fall under NEW leadership that isn't going to plow forward with the things that really need to be done. Ocean County Here!!
Heather, I am so sorry to see you go since it seems like you just got here!
Having said that despite your "temporary" situation you have managed to do
quite a bit in the last 10 months and I applaud you for it.
I am all for Janice taking over as SC and I know she will do a wonderful
job.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever you plan to do and hope that things
will smooth out for you in the new year.

Happy New Year. Essex County checking in.
Heather, I'm truly sorry to see you leave. You are a great resource.
I can't think of any one more qualified to take over than Janice Brown.
So a big "YES" to Janice for becoming SC.
Essex County Update:
In the past month Peggy Tebbetts asked me to take over the Essex County
mailing list which I accepted.
