I think graham's reference to South Auckland or Coromandel might be the
clue. South Auckland would mean further south than what we know of as south
and Coromandel suggests to me Karangahake which is between Paeroa and Waihi.

Tarawera Survey District, Hawkes Bay Land District. Doesn't mention a
If you Google Kopitonui you'll get a host of hits referring to Opitonui
Stream/River in South Auckland or the Coromandel.
