If you can pick up Barbara Windsor's family in WDYTYA you will find a Golding family tree
Yet there were further surprises in store for Barbara. Her maternal relatives weren't the
only ones moving to London for economic reasons - her great great great grandfather,
another bricklayer called Golding Deeks, originated from Bures, Suffolk, and moved to
London to find work, also ending up having to claim poor relief.
Yet Golding came from a relatively well off and educated family whose livelihood in the
brick trade was killed off by the Industrial Revolution. His mother's maiden name was
Golding, and by a quirk of fate one of her distant relatives was John Constable, the
famous painter. He ended up living in luxury in Hampstead, while Barbara's ancestors were
fated to endure the hardships of the East End. End quote:

Terminology is important. Did you mean "registration number" or "folio number"?
If 2024 is the folio number from the BDM fiche, read no further
If however reg number 2024 was the registration number from the dia
historical records website and was for an Eleanor DOWDALL you need to
Many people are having a problem comprehending that there are two
totally different systems.
The registration numbers from the dia website bear no relationship
whatever to the folio numbers from which can be deduced (through the
District Keys booklets or otherwise) the place where a birth or death
The new registration numbers from the dia site are unique to an
individual birth, death or marriage registration.
The old folio numbers from the BDM index fiche refer to the page on
which the birth, death or marriage was filed. There are usually more
than one birth or death recorded on a page.
The quarterly returns of births and deaths were filed in a particular
order, registration place by registration place. This enables one to
deduce the registration place for various folio numbers.
Marriages are different. Here the folio number IS a unique number for
each marriage. One can match the folio numbers to find the spouse -
as is done on the NZSG Marriages Index CD.
The catch is that marriages were not filed in any particular order.
There is no easy way of finding where the marriage took place other
than by getting a printout of the registration.
So if it is Eleanor DOWDALL's birth you are interested in, and that
number you quoted was from the dia website, you or someone needs to
look at the equivalent birth index entry on the BDM microfiche, note
the year and folio number, then look that up in the District Keys.
Hope this helps

] Birth Reg Number lookup please
Does anyone have access to the books of birth registration numbers who
could look up the district for this one for me please -
1890 birth, reg number 2024
Can't help with Mary Agnes as I did not have her on my database, but have two other children for Thomas William and Sarah:-
Richard Theophilus born 18 Aug 1847, died 23 Mar 1929 Masterton (did not find on BDM site)
Sarah Margaret 1850/936 (from BDM).
I have a vague feeling I have heard the story about the birth on the Petone foreshore - possibly from the aunts, Sarah and Iris (my aunty Hazel's aunts). If I find anything else among the stack of paper I'll send it on.

I am looking for the birth registration for Mary Agnes Tankersley, born 6 November 1841, at Petone. I can't seem to find her on the BDM site despite trying many variations of spelling Tankersley. Her parents are Thomas William (TW) and Sarah (nee Draper), I have verified that they were married in Wellington on 25/12/1840.
There is a family story that she was born in a tent on the foreshore and was the first white baby in Wellington. I am sceptical about this though.

Wonder if anyone has these names in their tree or could give me more information on Eliza Jane Ellis Nee Steele Please.
Eliza Jane Ellis b abt 1835 from Gloucestershire. -Her maiden name was Steel.
She married James Ellis in 1856, & they had William Edward Ellis in 1858. James Ellis seems to disappeared.
In both the 1861 & 1871 census's, Eliza Jane & Wm Edward Ellis are living with Eliza's family.
William Edward Ellis appears to be the only child.
William Edward Ellis came out to NZ & married Ellen Maher in 1882 in Nelson.
Eliza Jane Ellis also married Gardner Hunter in Nelson in 1883, at the home of an Edward Ellis.
Happy new year everyone.

Yours, John Wilson
Kia ora, Tom. I know a bit about glassmaking in New Zealand, and I am
confident there was no glassmaking in Dunedin in the 1930s. There might
have been some experimentation at Milton in South Otago in the 1880s, though
that is doubtful, and there were some nineteenth century attempts in
Auckland and Wellington also. But it was not until the arrival of the
Australian Glass Manufacturers factory in Penrose, Auckland in 1922 that
there was an established glass industry here - it continues to operate there
still. AGM was Melbourne based, and it may well be that was where your Mr
Paterson made glass in Melbourne. Between 1950 and 1987, AGM set up and
operated Crown Crystal Glass in Christchurch. From 1955 to 1984 Philips
Electrical operated a glassworks in Wellington making electrical glass for
televisions and similar items. As far as I know those have been the only
successful glass factories in New Zealand.
So if William Paterson worked in a glass factory in New Zealand in the
1930s, it must have been in Auckland. It is possible that he went / was
sent to Dunedin to start a factory there, but if he did it was not
successful. So perhaps he did go into the hotel business, at the consumer
end of glassmaking, so to speak. But that's just speculation! Good luck in

That's too much memorization for today's students, the reformers say. In its

teach students to understand how and why words are spelled the way they are.
At the risk of worrying overmuch about this . we do. Texting is one good
reason why. The abbreviated spellings used in this method of communication
are a useful shorthand, but can wreak havoc with proper spelling. Given this

I am looking for all the burials of the SPEAKMAN family in the Mangere Cemetery.
Elizabeth SPEAKMAN nee BALMER was buried there on the 3rd July 1905 aged 68 (this from her death certificate).
I suspect her husband William and their children (whose names I do not know at this stage) may also be buried there.
I have searched for a database of the Mangere Cemetery but was not successfull. Can anyone tell me if there is one and if so, how can it be accessed
I have looked at the NZ Burial Locator and there appear to be a number of SPEAKMANs buried in Mangere Cemetery. In the case of Elizabeth SPEAKMAN, after the word Location, it had Mangere Cemetery B04.22, can anyone tell me what these numbers mean, are they grave/row numbers or do they mean something else?

Hi to all those in warm New Zealand, from a very cold UK, Happy New Year!
I'm trying to track down living relatives in NZ, and give thanks to those
who have helped from my previous request.
Kate Alice BRAILSFORD emigrated in 1921, and married Leslie Alexander BLACK
25th Oct 1928 in Christchurch.
She died 15th Nov 2002 aged 95, but as married to Alan TOWERS, buried with
Kate was the ashes of her daughter Jennifer Alice Brailsford FINNIE died
1994, aged 56 (1938, born Chatham Isles), with no idea what her maiden name
On Kate's death certificate it was mentioned (2002) that there were two
daughters aged 68 & 56 and a son aged 73, thus 1934, 1946, and 1929.
As I cannot research any birth on the NZ archives site unless they are on
the historical part, I wondered if any kind soul could search for me.
One other thing, Kate's death cert. suggests she only married once, to Alan,
but I have a marriage cert for her to Leslie, and there's no doubt I have
the right person.
When I try to find Leslie's birth details, Alan TOWERS name comes up, giving
me the idea that they are the same person, perhaps someone can suggest
(I cannot find a marriage for her to Alan, or a death for Leslie, but the
birth year for Leslie was 1899 on the marriage cert., with Alan born 22nd
Thank Y' Kindly,
Rod Smith, Nottingham UK
