Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Actualy when I read the offending piece I didn't ,at first , regard it as
spam. My first thought was. "That might be handy for someone who doesn't
know how to do it themself."
Then I realised he was looking for money.
I still don't if the offender was a regular member of the group trying to be
helpful or aprofessional scrounger.

Good points Barry - first learn where the delete key is. If you don't like
it -delete it. Don't waste everyones time by responding.
Not all of us subscribe to magazines and that's up to the editor as
to what they print - but - the general rule is NO ADVERTISING on the mailing
lists. I appreciate there will always be arguements as to what is (is what
is not) advertising but I look at it this way- if someone is advising of a
site where information is available for free - then thats not advertising.
It's the ones who advertise information at a cost who are advertising.
Ancestry.com being the prime culprit.
We must all take some responsibility for what happens on these
lists. So many have lapsed into oblivion because of this very reason. And
here I must have a dig at the list administrator. I have been on some lists
for at least 6 years now and there is no trouble at all - simply because the
administrator (at the first sign) blocks the offender.
I think this has been, and should continue to be, a great list.
Don't get sidetracked. Stay focused on your individual challenge. What would
have happened if nobody had responded to the original offending posting???
Lets get back to genealogy.

There's spam and then a New Zealand business, advertising with a seriously
bad sense of timing wishes to make a point.
So, they failed ........
AND they have made several violatons in respect of their web space hosting
then announced it here . Tut tut.
Rootsweb continuously supports advertising. I refrain from Yahoo &
Geocities sites because of their advertising irrelevant or untasteful
products, yet when one of our own makes a suggestion relevant to our
pursuits, it is ruled out as some ne're-do-well about to rip us off with
some inappropriate product. Its not like one could not actually contact /
phone the writer or post a note to their Palmerston North address. Timing
is never right for everybody, but is right for somebody.
The New Zealand list is full of advertising - both in Hugh's taglines and
writers' signature lines or specifics.
Then of course there are those with incomplete knowlege as how to use the
delete key and thereby repeat entirely any offending article, assuring
I wonder how many will enquire of a similar product advertised in "The New
Zealand Genealogist", Nov/Dec 2004, page 407? Perhpas that too is a

I reported the despicable analog to digital spammer to their host who
have taken down the spam referenced site.
I now have a warm feeling of satisfaction.
I don't think we will be hearing from them again.

Does anyone know if either there is an online searchable list or even where to find the information off line on JP's.
I have an ancestor who died in 1936 & going from the directory rolls just prior to his death he became a JP. I do not know what or if I may follow up on that line of search.
I have subscribed to several lists in the London area, sent emails to many people in both NZ and UK asking the following question without success.
According to Barry Buckley in 'Sails of Suffering', part of the agreement between the NZ Company and the men who sailed in the 'Whitby' and the 'Will Watch', was that the wives and children of those men would be given free accommodation at the Company's depot in Deptford. From late April 1841 to early September 1841 when the 'Lloyds' sailed, most of 73 women and 139 children apparently spent the five months at the NZ Company depot at Deptford being accommodated, feed and cared for by the NZ Company.
Therefore, with the census being taken on the night of 7th June 1841, the women and children should have been included in the census.
Would anyone know the location of the NZ Company depot at that time? Deptford was apparently in two parishes. The 1841 census for one parish alone is on 17 films or 84 fiche! Where do I begin to look? Was the depot actually in Deptford? Any suggestions please?

I am trying to research a family of Clarks from ChCh with absolutely no
success, possibly because the husband's name keeps changing, ie
1879 Intention to Marry Jacob Isaac Clark aged 24, Painter, from
Portsmouth (1 year in ChCh)
1879 Marriage Cert Isaac Jacob Clark married JULIA JANE DOWNING
1881 Birth Certificate Isaac William Clark - daughter Ada's birth
certificate (Harper St, ChCh)
1900 Marriage Cert Isaac Jacob Clark - on Ada's marriage
1934 Death Cert Albert Stevens Clark - on wife Julia's
They had nine children between 1878 and 1896 but the only known name is ADA.
Apart from ordering every Clark birth certificate, is there any way of
finding out children's names? I have no idea when Mr Clark died. Have
searched main cemetery records for ChCh, Dunedin and Wellington without any
success although found Julia buried in Sydenham. There appears to be no
Clark children at Sydenham or Addington schools during this time that I can
Can't find a shipping arrival for him and no birth in my searches of
Portsmouth records on line.
There is an Isaac Clark, Painter listed at Montreal Street in the 1883/4 PO
There is a Julia Clark living in Windmill Street Sydenham in 1899 Electoral
Any suggestions as to how or where I could proceed would be very helpful
and appreciated or should it go into the "too hard" basket?

I'm researching the ARTHUR family from all directions. My father,
Harold Thomas Arthur, was descended from an English ARTHUR (Bristol,
England). My mother, Elsie Winifred Arthur, was descended from a Cornish
ARTHUR (St Blazey, Cornwall).
My mother often referred to her cousin SAMUEL ARTHUR in New Zealand. So,
are there any Arthur's over there with a Samuel Arthur who arrived about
1870 or whose father Samuel arrived about then?
I have lots of Arthur info. if anyone is interested because I tried to sort
out the pair of them!
Thomas Richard (Dick) Arthur.

Your apology is refused and of no merit as you attempt to capitalise on
enormous suffering to make a filthy buck.
Please go away and check your humanity.
You really are despicable.
Can someone please tell me who wrote the book Tawa Flat and the Old Porirua Road..I have a couple of pages out of it.. would love the book..
Have had it sent to me for Catt family, but there are other names relevant to settlers to settled in Carterton.
Joy I deleted your message this morning in error, but I did check the
Auckland public Library website for Auckland passenger arrivals for 1838
- 1886 and put in Henry Fletcher and there is a record for him. But go
to this site and check it out, it may or may not be the same guy.

John James HAY married 1872 (folio 199) Elizabeth GEOGOHAN
I guess this is another of the very many variations of this surname - and possibly
why it is difficult to find.
Question - are you researching the HAY or the GEOGHEGAN side of this union ?
If you are looking at the GEOGHEGAN side - then where did this Elizabeth come from ?
I have recently unexpectedly found some distant MORLEY relatives in Sth Island of
N.Z. and around this time. My Morley had a cousin (WILLANS) who married a GEOGHEGAN.
I wonder if some of them may have been here as well.
There are others of both GEOGHEGAN and WILLANS in NSW, Australia.
Also if you are researching GEOGHEGAN there is an unofficial one-name-study of the
name going on over many of the rootsweb mailing lists. If you wish I can pass your
email to one of the more active prime movers.
