Worldcat.org is an Interlibrary loan system that libraries use to find and obtain books
from other libraries in the US or around the world. Each library system has their won
rules regarding its use. My library system will obtain items from within the 50 states
but will not go outside the country. Sometimes they will even obtain materials from
Library of Congress. Some libraries will charge for obtaining an item via OCLC while
others provide the service for free. Why? At this point in time it is figured to cost
approximately $35 for your library to put forth the paperwork, search OCLC, see if
particular library is willing to send the item (if not, the search must begin again), pay
the postage, get the item to you then return it to the lending library. However, this
service is important for genealogical purposes. You may find genealogical books about
your family. Try using the advanced search -- it's easy! Type a surname into the
keyword search. You may get 1000s of !
hits or 0, but it is sure worth the try. If you find something -- either print out the
entire record or take the following info to your local library (accuracy is very
important): author or editor; the exact title, including subtitles (this is also very
important); publisher, publication year (copyright); the OCLC number; and if provided, the
ISBN number. The ISBN number is the "International Standard Book Number". Each
edition of a book receives a number. The first number denotes the country which published
the book. The next few numbers are related to a specific publisher. The last few numbers
are individual to that edition of the book.
So give it a try -- who knows what treasure(s) you will discover.
