"The Man I Called My Brother"
My brother was a good man. He could make anyone laugh with his laugh, he had beautiful
blue eyes you could sink into. He always had a good story or a joke to tell you, and even
if you'd heard it over and over he'd always tell it like you'd never heard it
at all. He had never seen an enemy.
He was a brother, a son, an uncle, a grandson, a nephew.
Most of all, he was someone who couldn't be copied, one of a kind.
He was my brother.
My brother lived in residential homes for more than twenty years of his life. In August
2006, he died at the age of 46 from what we were told was a heart attack. As with the loss
of any loved one, the loss of my brother was hard to bear. On January 3, 2007, my family
and I once again had to mourn the loss of my brother, and ask why we must go through the
mourning once again. On that day, we found out that my brother's cause of death was
not from a heart attack as we were previously informed. My brother died from the ingestion
of a household cleanser. No longer was this a health issue concerning his death, it was a
case of neglect on behalf of the residential home he lived in.
One of my brother's passions were his liquids and drinks. If he saw you with a soda,
some kool aid, or a glass of tea then he needed one too. Today we have so many types of
cleansers that are colored and made to smell good, anyone could mistake it for a colored
drink. Residential homes like the one my brother lived in, as well as other shelters,
nursing homes, and institutions are required by law to keep such chemicals and cleansers
under lock and key. They are never to be left out on cleaning carts or other open surfaces
where they can be reached and mistakenly ingested. These are harmful chemicals, with many
other problems that can be caused by this neglect, to include the effects of cleansers in
contact with one's skin or eyes.
I am sending this message to bring awareness to the neglect our society is treating these
harmful chemicals with. Please, if you have family in any of the above facilities, or even
children in daycare and school facilities, make sure the chemicals are being kept out of
reach of those they can harm. The results that these chemicals can have when ingested or
otherwise can be devastating; in this case our loss was permanent. I cannot bring my
brother back, but with your help we can avoid this from happening again. Please forward
this message and spread the awareness to as many people as you can, as it may save a life.
THANK YOU.
THIS NEGLECT
HAS TO
!!!!!! STOP !!!!!!
