Hi Laura, I don't know what area of the state you are referencing, but
I believe Gold Canyon was once referred to
as Wall Canyon, pre 1860. It was an early description of how the local
Indians used the natural walls of the canyon to
box-in or wall up, their livestock and wild horses. With the discovery
of Gold, in the belly of the canyon, the canyon
soon became known as Gold Canyon. I don't know of a Butcher Flat, but there
is American Flat. Some citizens of
American Flat were buried in Silver City With that in mind I'm including
these posts:
