It occurs to me that Jerusha is a very "northeastern US" type name, perhaps
coming out of Vermont, New York, etc. Until families started to migrate
south and west, this name was not common outside the northeastern states.
It's just a thought that came to me early on in our correspondence. Denend
or Denning also sounds more Irish or Scots than it does Cherokee or Native
American, not that she couldn't have Native American ancestry.
Following the lead of the John Denning (Denend) living with Jerusha Johns in
the 1870 Kansas census, I think I trace him to perhaps his brothers being
James and Henry Denning (Denend). They are in Cowley Co., Kansas in 1880,
and state that their father was born NY and mother born OH, but the boys
were born in Indiana. It's all speculation at this point, but as I work
back into the census records, I arrived at a man named Umphrey or Humphrey
Denend, born about 1755 in NY, with a wife named Jerusha! Is it possible
that one of the sons of Humphrey & Jerusha Denend married and named a
daughter Jerusha, which is your person? Again, just speculation and will
take a lot more research. The tree at Ancestry states that Humphrey and
Jerusha Denend had a son named William born about 1802, who settled in
Indiana, St. Joseph County, by 1840.
Perhaps one of the Denend family men went into Huntington County, Indiana,
which is where Jerusha married Peter Fout(s) in 1839. I find a marriage of
a woman named Ellen Denend to Isaac S. Yehumy (that spelling is probably
wrong) at Ancestry, the marriage taking place 25 Dec 1861. Could this Ellen
be a neice of Jerusha? Who knows, but at least this validates the Denend
name in Huntington Co. in the similar timeframe to Jerusha Denend.
From land records, there was also a James Denend who filed for land in
Huntington Co., Indiana, 2 November 1837. Is he a brother to Jerusha maybe?
I'll leave it to you to research further. Hope this helps you.
