Mrs. Gerde Rites Set at Noonan
Word has been received at Noonan of the death of Mrs. George P. (Gurina) Gerde, 84
years old and a long time resident of the Noonan area. Her passing occurred at a nursing
home in Belgrade, Minn., Monday, Sept. 14th, where she had been living the past few
Funeral services are being held today, Wednesday, Sept. 16th, at 1:30p.m. at Belgrade.
The remains will then be returned to Noonan, where final services will be held in the
Bethlehem Lutheran church in that city, Friday, Sept. 18th, at 2 p.m. Rev. Milford
Parkhurst will be the officiating clergyman and Stakston Funeral Home of Noonan will be in
charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Bethlehem cemetery, beside her husband, who
passed away January 14, 1955.
Mrs. Gerde, the former Gurina Strand, was born at Sacred Heart, Minn., on the 5th day
of December, 1879, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Finger Strand. She grew to womanhood in
that area and when a young lady, lived for a time in Pope County, Minn. She was united in
marriage to George P. Gerde on March 11th, 1903, the ceremony taking place in the Barsness
Chippewa Falls parsonage, south of Glenwood. They came to Noonan in 1906, and lived for a
time in Mentor township, and in 1909, moved to the farm a mile south of Noonan where they
farmed for 35 years, when they retired and moved into Noonan. Following the dearth of her
husband, she has been spending most of the time in the area where her daughter lived.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sam (Amelia) Austin at Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Odean (
Petra) Lenning of Sedan, Minn. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Peter Gerde, Terrace,
Minn. Mrs. Gerhard Thompson, Sedan, Minn., Mrs. Emma Stone, Glenwood, Minn., and Mrs.
Carl Stenson, who resides in Canada.
