Hi all,
It has come to my attention that some folks are misunderstanding my
concern over our archives.
I am NOT advocating "splitting up" the contents of the archives of the
USGW Project.
I *realize* and respect that some people may feel this is best, but I do
not share that view.
As a matter of fact, I happen to like the way the current archives
project is formatted and set up, and I have no desire to see it's format changed.
My ONLY concern about this situation is the agreement which grants
exclusivity to *one* server to house this entity (i.e. archives).
If the archives *project* (as a whole) ever needed to be or wanted to be
moved to another server, this agreement seems to preclude it.
My suggestion was also never intended to imply that Linda be separated
from the project. Again, others may be suggesting it, but I am not.
My WHOLE point in my suggestion was since people seemed to feel
uncomfortable with the archives (as a unit!) being "separate" from USGW,
and having a different agreement with RootsWeb than does the USGW
project, then wouldn't it just be easiest for Linda and the archives to
become part of USGW??
I realize Linda's archives project contains contributions from other
researchers who aren't necessarily volunteers in USGW...but it seems to
me those folks already think of their contributions as having been made
to the project -- so I don't think THEY would object if the archives
project (as a unit) actually *became* a function *within* USGW. Whereas
the reverse (i.e. it functioning separately and with a different
agreement with RW) *does* cause concern for at least some portion
(myself included) of USGW.
Understand, this is *my* opinion, and this is what *I* was trying to
accomplish. It certainly seemed at the time to be a simple enough way to
solve the problem.
Unfortunately, it appears several people may have misinterpreted me and
thought I wanted to either split up the archives, or take the archives
away from Linda, or both. And that is NOT the case!!
I happen to LIKE the archives!! I just don't like that the project (i.e.
the whole unit of it) must operate under a separate agreement as to
where it must be housed.
I gathered from Linda's comments the archives project was acutally
formed a bit ahead or somewhat simultaneous to the formation of the USGW
Project, and *I* thought that probably accounted for the difference in
agreement regarding server space. I genuinely thought we had a situation
where nobody had bothered to ASK Brian if he minded the archives
operating under the same arrangement as USGW -- i.e. space is available
but not required.
Well....so much for the benefit of the doubt!
Good Lord, I was NOT prepared for the voracity of tone in Brian's reply
to a perfectly well-intended suggestion!
Seems to me his response spoke volumes.
Again, so sorry for any misunderstanding about my suggestion on the
archives project. I hope I've now made my position clear - and if I
haven't, PLEASE let me know!
Sandy
