This was complete news to me, so I thought I would share it with others.
Many of us have access to free census images through our local
libraries for free. And for many of us, this access is available at
home. This availability is dependant on what products your local
libraries subscribe to.
Paul sent me this link:
http://www.eogen.com/HeritageQuestOnline
which lists each state and what libraries have access to
HeritageQuest. I live in Ohio, and although the link works for me and
my library card, I have yet to get online successfully. So I am going
to the library today to get additional info.
Paul also mentioned he knows that some libraries give
Ancestry.com
access. My local library site lists this as well, but again, there
appears to be a username/password and I don't know what they want, so
I'm going to check that at my library today.
It is my understanding that there are North Carolina folks on this
list that do use Heritage Quest for free from home based on this
information. And I know about half of us live in NC, so that is good
news. I'm really shocked that I didn't know this. I even use my
local libraries "Local History Room" frequently and no one ever
mentioned this.

Hey - I just came across this tonight. SK Publications is offering
census images on CD at a discounted rate for some counties. Of course
one of my counties isn't one of them. (I think it is the counties
they have done CDs for before.) If you are like me, you don't have a
lot of money to spend on this hobby, but I wanted to share just in
case this was something someone was interested in.
The price is 26 cents a page, with a $20 minimum, which would probably
cover a rural counties in the earlier years, but I this could cost
more money in the more populated areas. The cool thing is they will
donate an extra copy to USGenWeb for the archives to view online.
Here is the link if anyone is interested.
