Here's the description as posted on the QUAKER-ROOTS list:
There is to be a study program at Guilford
College on June 17-22, 2001 that may be of interest to you.
It is called Exploring Carolina Quaker Crossroads. Attendees will stay on
the campus of Guilford College (est. as New Garden Boarding School in
1837) in a small dormitory named for Mary Mendenhall Hobbs. The famous
confrontation of Lord Cornwallis and Gen. Nathaniel Green at the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse took place nearby at what is now a National Park. Many
soldiers who died in the battle are buried in the New Garden cemetery.
The old meetinghouse was used as a hospital.
Emphasis of the program will be on how the beliefs and practices of Friends
helped to shape Piedmont, North Carolina. Field trips include visits to
the Mendenhall Plantation which features a false-bottomed carriage used to
transport slaves on the Underground Railroad; a Quaker pottery at New Salem;
the outdoor drama about Friends in the Revolution, "The Sword of Peace";
stops at Springfield, Centre, New Garden and Cane Creek Meetings; and the
Springfield Museum of Early Domestic Life. All transportation will be
provided.
Also there will be optional genealogy workshops and an opportunity to visit
the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College, where the original
minutes of most N. C. meetings are kept, as well as published histories
and files on many Quaker families.
Other nearby attractions are Old Salem, a historical restoration of a
Moravian town; and the NC Zoological Park near Asheboro. Mountains and
beach are about 3 hrs. away in opposite directions.
The cost is $475 if registration is made before April 1; after April 1,
$500. Send $100 registration fee to Friends Center at Guilford College.
Space is limited. Registrations will be accepted until May 31.
Registration fee is fully refundable until April 15. A confirmation packet
with additional information will be mailed after your registration is
received. All meals and fees included in cost. A few commuter slots
available without room and board costs.
