I have since found the following description from NC Archives concerning
early Sampson County records.....so in case this information helps
others, here it is:
"Early court records are missing; losses may have been caused by Federal
sympathizers in 1865 and clerk's office fire of 1921."
Not sure if those reasons specific necessarily account for the missing
marriage records, but indeed, NC Archives only lists holding only the
marriage registers from 1867-1968, despite the fact that Sampson was
formed in 1784.

To the best of my knowledge there is no a list of marriage records
anywhere
for early Sampson Co. My mother's family was from Sampson and when I
was
working on her side of the family, I ran into the same problem.
