Folks,
Its about midnight before a holiday weekend. Lets not spend our time
fretting and arguing on this list about what RootsWeb is allegedly doing to
destroy our project. And, lets not chastise each other or the SC for their
choice of webhosts as each local coordinator and each state coordinator is
free to choose their own webhost according to the USGenWeb bylaws.
Further, all coordinators at whatever level are free to install, or not
install, a search engine of their choice with or without approval from any
other USGenWeb project member.
I have noted some complaints about why I did not post to this list the "new"
offerings by
Ancestry.com. As a user of
RootsWeb.com webhosting services,
and a paid subscriber to
Ancestry.com, I know that they regularly send
newsletters, emails, provider agreement changes, acceptable use policy
agreement changes, etc. to their users and subscribers. Why should I repost
these to this list since most of you have already received them and those of
you who use other webhosting services are not interested?
Apparently, all the confusion and proliferation of postings on this topic
resulted from a botched genealogical search engine installation by
Ancestry.com a couple of weeks ago. Their installation errors highlighted
problems with Cached pages. The Cached data concept is used by every ISP,
Browser, and search engine service...and has been a standard since the mid
1970's. But, for some reason, folks picked up on this and overreacted by
changing ISP's, search engines, etc., and throwing rocks at
Ancestry.com...and each other!
Best wishes to all for a good holiday weekend. And for those of us in NC,
best wishes for rain.
Regards,
Paul
