Sandy,
I could not agree more! Do you have any thoughts about how
we should proceed? I will start by posting a statement on
the NCGenWeb-L but still prefer (just personally) to keep
discussion here. Maybe those who wish to lend to the
discussion will sub here as well.
BTW, the counties that have been seized will be back online
on a new server within the next hour or 2 and I will send
you the new URL for your links and do the same for other
adjoining counties as well. I will also get the new links
added to the NCGenWeb counties list.
Just in case anyone else should have need for a site, there
is more than enough room on the leased server I will be
using. I think it has 300 gigs of storage and the county
sites measure in megs instead of gigs. It has provisions
for sub-domains with distinct passwords as well. I don't
think anyone else will have a problem but just in case, do
let me know if anyone should need new space. It is
currently paid for and secured for 2 years in advance.

Good idea.
I'm not sure the extent to which search engines have ever
been
discussed in NCGenWeb, but the whole subject of search
engines has
looong been *very* controversial within the overall
USGenWeb Project
- especially on the USGenWeb-Discuss list. Some people
seem to feel
that placement of a search engine should be made mandatory
for every
USGW county site, while others do not want a search box of
any kind
on their sites.
And since Nola's proposal for a project-wide search engine
for all of
NCGenWeb has been made in the context of a discussion of
this week's
very *negative* search engine situation......
well, the better part of wisdom simply seems to be to
proceed with a
bit of caution and be sure the whole project is fully
informed of the
proposal and has full opportunity to think about it, ask
questions,
and participate in the decision.
Perhaps Denise could formulate something and post it to
NCGenWeb-L.
